Discover Púchov: Archaeology, Architecture and Blue-Dye Printing
Accommodation in Púchov
Púchov’s historical traces reach far back: archaeological classifications, distinctive buildings, memorial sites and the history of blue-dye printing offer different ways to explore the town. There are also events and seasonal leisure activities. Which of these aspects interests you most may also play a part in planning your stay.
Archaeology and the Púchov culture
The Púchov culture is dated from the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD; its heyday was in the 1st century AD. At Púchovská skala, cultural periods from the Upper Stone Age to Roman times have been identified. These accounts present two different timeframes side by side: a specific cultural development and an archaeological sequence that reaches further back.
The Museum of the Púchov Culture is housed in the Župný dom. The exhibition includes selected archaeological artefacts, among them brooches, a type of neck ring, parts of axes, spears, a javelin and a knife, as well as smaller tools and implements. If you are interested in particular exhibits, bear in mind that the selection on display may change.
Buildings and memorial sites
The Župný dom is a Baroque-classical building commissioned by Imrich Marczibányi in the late 18th century. Originally, it served as a salt storehouse and administrative building; today it houses the Museum of the Púchov Culture. This brings the building’s former function and the archaeological exhibition together in one place.
The memorial rectory, built in 1904, stands on Moravská ulica. From 1911 to 1925, it was the workplace of the Slovak poet and Evangelical pastor Vladimír Roy. Another memorial plaque commemorates Jan Amos Comenius’s stay in Púchov. The Evangelical church is also on Moravská ulica: the neo-Gothic building dates from 1880 and contains a Renaissance altar from 1643. Here, the construction date and the date of the interior furnishings are clearly far apart.
Blue-dye printing and events
The historic Púchov blue-dye printing workshop has been in Púchov since 1898, when it was moved there from Záriečie. Its site also has its own history: in 1988, it was registered as an immovable national cultural monument under number ÚZPF 10055/1. The workshop thus brings together a craft tradition and a specific cultural heritage designation.
The Mikulášsky jarmok takes place on the first Saturday in December in Púchov’s pedestrian zone. Its tradition began in 2004. The Folklórny Púchov festival has also been held regularly since 1982. Each time, a procession in traditional costume through the town precedes the dance and singing performances; the annual festival dates vary. If you plan to attend either event, check the specific dates and programme before your trip.
Educational trail and seasonal leisure
The “Pamäť lesa” educational trail was created to make the cultural and natural heritage of the cross-border region more attractive to its residents and visitors. One information point includes a viewpoint, seating, a memorial stone and an information board. The trail thus brings nature and cultural themes together at a specific site, while the museum and historic buildings offer other ways to explore Púchov’s history.
Púchov’s seasonal outdoor summer swimming pool is open to the general public, the swimming club, holiday camps and sports training camps. Public facilities include a sunbathing lawn, a children’s playground, fitness equipment, snack stands and a children’s hut with a swing. Facilities may change with the season or due to renovations; check current opening times before your visit.
During its seasonal opening hours, the skatepark in Púchov is open to the public. Its features include a quarterpipe, a bank ramp, a funbox with a grind box and a ledge. Check the operator’s current seasonal opening hours before visiting.
