Discover Záriečie
Accommodation in Záriečie
Záriečie lies at the transition between the Javorníky and the White Carpathians, northwest of the town of Púchov. Anyone looking for a hotel in Záriečie can get to know the place through its specific cultural and historical themes: landscape, archaeological finds, church architecture, folklore and local sporting tradition. These themes range from Bronze Age finds and 18th-century crafts to folklore traditions and cycle trial.
Landscape and archaeological traces
Mestecká skala rises above the villages of Mestečko and Záriečie. Polished stone axes dating from the Bronze Age and a burial site were discovered in the rock crevice at the small castle there. Záriečie thus brings together a clearly defined landscape setting and specific archaeological finds. When planning your trip, you can combine two different interests: the transition between the mountain ranges and the history of a particular place above the villages.
Church, memorial and local history
The evangelical church in Záriečie is a Neoclassical hall church with a roof turret. A Protestant gallery runs around the interior on three sides. The church was built in 1786 as a Toleration church without a tower, on the site of a wooden church. The renovation is dated to 1859, though 1856 is also cited; the building was given a tower at that time. The construction and renovation mark two distinct building phases that can be traced in the church’s architectural history.
The gallery houses a one-manual organ with nine stops. It is thought to date from the beginning of the 20th century. Near the evangelical church stands a memorial to M. R. Štefánik, erected in 1935. Another link to local history is the birthplace of J. Geryk, an ethnographer and museum worker: it is in Záriečie and bears a commemorative plaque. The church, memorial and plaque each highlight a different aspect—architectural history, remembrance and a life story connected to a person.
Folklore, crafts and sport
The village’s cultural history also has several facets. In the 18th century, residents made knives, worked at a fulling mill, sewed slippers worn with traditional costumes, wove, did carpentry and tanned leather. Their activities thus included textile and leather work, as well as knife-making and carpentry. They offer a glimpse into historical crafts.
The Záriečanka folklore group was founded in Záriečie in 1995. Its practices include self-embroidered folk costumes, three-part singing, traditional dances and folk music. The group performs in Záriečie, in the Púchov Valley, throughout Slovakia and abroad. It contributes to preserving and presenting the folklore traditions of the Púchov Valley. Alongside the architectural and archaeological themes, it represents a cultural tradition expressed through singing, dance, music and costume.
Another aspect of local culture is sport: cycle trial is the predominant sport in Záriečie. The local cycle trial club has produced three world champions and other successful athletes. When planning a stay, you can choose your focus accordingly: church architecture and memorial sites lead to local history, Záriečanka to folklore, and cycle trial to sporting tradition. These themes can help you get to know Záriečie as a destination before looking for a hotel for your stay.
