Belusa: Cultural Monuments and Hiking Destinations in the Region
Accommodation in Belusa
Beluša combines historic religious buildings with scenic and hiking destinations in the region. The town lies in the northern part of the Ilava Basin, where it meets the White Carpathians, the Javorníky, and the Strážov Mountains. This gives you two clear areas to focus on when planning your trip: the cultural sites in Beluša itself and the year-round opportunities for hiking and cycling in Belušské Slatiny. If you are looking for a hotel in Belusa, you can tailor your search to the purpose of your trip: will your stay focus mainly on the buildings and religious art, or would you like to include hiking and cycling in your plans?
Cultural Monuments and Local History
The Chapel of Saint Fabian and Saint Sebastian is a national cultural monument and is among Slovakia’s oldest surviving buildings. The Chapel of Saint Anne dates from the second half of the 13th century. The interior of the Parish Church of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary was designed in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The main altar features a painting by Jozef Božetech Klemens. It was created in 1879 to replace an earlier painting and still dominates the altar today.
Beluša’s local history also includes the Beluša basket-weaving school and the Hradište archaeological site. The basket-weaving school was the first school of its kind in Slovakia to take part in the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris. Hradište is considered the most valuable evidence of settlement in the municipality of Beluša. The Jewish cemetery in Beluša has 92 burial sites.
The renovated Izba ľudových tradícií, on the first floor of the Beluša Cultural Centre on Farská Street, offers a glimpse into local traditions. It has been open to the public since June 28, 2015, by prior appointment. Plan your visit in advance by making an appointment.
Scenery, Rocks, and Hiking Trails
Belušské Slatiny offers year-round opportunities for recreation, hiking, and cycling. The Cesta básnikov hiking trail runs through the Slatinská dolina valley and the surrounding forests. The project, initiated by OZ Art Belušské Slatiny, has been running since 2022 and enhances the area with interesting places to rest, mostly benches connected to people associated with the area.
Belušské vráta is a short rocky gorge carved by the Slatinský stream into the limestone bedrock of the so-called Manín nappe complex. The gorge can be reached via a paved road leading from Belušské Slatiny toward the municipality of Mojtín. Rohatá skala is a tourist attraction in the Strážov Mountains. From the summit, views open up to the northwest and west, toward the Javorníky and the White Carpathians.
For a hike to Ostrá Malenica in the wider region, a green-marked trail leads from Slopná or Mojtín. Check trail conditions locally. Also in the wider region is the 46-metre-long Mojtínska Cave, which contains a life-size statue of Saint Joseph.
Spiritual Sites and Trip Planning
The rock sanctuary on Mount Butkov hosts spiritual activities throughout the year. There are also hiking opportunities on well-maintained grounds. Studnička pod Lomom includes a stone Lourdes grotto with statues of the Virgin Mary and Bernadette Soubirous. Thermal water flows from a spring at the grotto in Belušské Slatiny, in front of the statues.
The Belušský jarmok is a local fair held on the last Sunday in June. If you plan to include the fair in your trip, check the specific event date. Beluša is conveniently located near a motorway and a railway line.
