Landscape and Getting Around
From a bus stop in Šútovce, you can reach Šútovské sedlo in about 20 minutes on foot through the forest. This walking time is an estimate and may vary depending on your pace and conditions. Allow for some flexibility when planning the walk, and check the current trail status before setting out.
Local History and Buildings
Šútovce is a serf settlement dating from the 12th century. The municipality was formed in 1922 by the merger of Horné Šútovce and Dolné Šútovce. The two place names also appear in the names of the chapels, helping you identify which part of the village each building belongs to.
The Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Dolné Šútovce dates from 1908. In Horné Šútovce, the Chapel of Our Lady dates from 1920. The small Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows was built before 1900 and is the oldest of Šútovce’s chapels. Together, the buildings reflect different periods in the village’s history.
Šútovce’s cultural centre also has a former function: it was a local elementary school. The building was built before 1900, probably around 1890. The former school building thus complements the chapels if you explore local history through different types of buildings.
Historical agriculture is another aspect of the village’s past. Horné Šútovce was known for its extensive fruit growing, especially cherries. This tradition adds insight into the area’s former character to the history of its buildings.
Compare Hiking Trails and Routes
The Pálfyho trail runs for 1.02 km through Šútovce, is 4.4 km long in total, and is managed by Hornonitrianske stopy. The Bojnicko - Dubnický okruh also passes through Šútovce, covering 687 m there. For a comparison of the sections within the village, the distances are 1.02 km and 687 m; the 4.4 km figure for the Pálfyho trail, by contrast, refers to its total length.
Marked hiking trails over Šútovské sedlo lead to the summit of Boškovho lazu at 935 m and the summit of Magura at 1,141.3 m. Magura is therefore the higher of the two named summit destinations. Another route is the Rokošská radiála, which descends steeply from Šútovské sedlo to Šútovce. The routes described differ both in their destinations and in their stated distances and courses.
When planning, it is important to distinguish sections within the village from a trail’s total length. For the route to Šútovské sedlo, also allow for the approximate walking time through the forest. Check the current route before setting out, and bear in mind that your pace and conditions may affect how long the walk takes.
