Klacno: Kľak, Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Klacno
Kľačno lies in the northern part of the Upper Nitra Basin, on both sides of the Nitra River, at an elevation of 360 to 460 m above sea level. Kľak reaches 1,352 m; the Kľak State Nature Reserve was established in 1966 and covers 86 ha. The elevation comparison highlights two clearly different reference points: the village in the basin and the summit. If you include both in your travel plans, the valley and the mountain destination are separate parts of your stay.
Landscape, Spring and Waterfall
Protected plant species grow on the dolomite rock of Kľak, including škarda sibírska, timotejka sibírska, soldanelka karpatská, žltohlav európsky, prilbica pestrá and zvonček karpatský. These named species give Kľak’s natural environment a specific botanical dimension alongside its summit elevation. The Kľacký Waterfall is also located below Kľak.
The Nitra rises below Reváň. There is a footbridge at the spring, along with a covered seating area with benches. This gives you different nature-focused options for planning your trip: the summit and its protected plant life, the waterfall, or the spring area and its seating. You can focus your stay on particular places and landscape features.
Hiking Trails and Winter Activities
A marked hiking trail leads from Kľačno to Kľak. The marked “Cesta hrdinov SNP” trail also runs along the Kľak ridge. A route described as a summit or mountain hike leads from Fačkovské sedlo to Fačkov: it is 11.7 km long and is listed as taking 4 hours and 30 minutes. These distance and duration figures apply to the described route, not to every trail to Kľak in general. Before setting out, check the route and estimated time, as trail conditions and timings can change.
For a route to Kľak, “Kľačno, Fačkovské sedlo” is listed as the departure stop and “Fačkov, obchodné stredisko” as the destination stop. If you use these stops to plan your journey, check the timetable before travelling. This keeps the hiking route and public transport journey distinct as separate planning steps.
Winter sports are also an option in Kľačno: an older tourist description lists seven downhill runs at the Fačkovské sedlo ski arena, with a combined length of 5,500 m, as well as ski and snowboard schools for children and adults. Before travelling, check the current figures and whether these facilities are operating.
Church, Monument and Local History
The church has an Early Gothic origin; a parish already existed at this site in the 13th century. The church was first mentioned in writing in 1464. The parish and the first written mention mark different points in the area’s history. The Marian Column was erected in front of the church in 1749; it was declared a cultural monument in 1966. The Lourdes Chapel was built in 1931.
Until 1948, the municipality was called Gajdel; it was then renamed Kľačno. Historically, Gajdel was known for dried plums, which were also sold in Vienna. This plum tradition adds a former local trade, with markets beyond the area, to the history of the buildings and church. Together, the local history and nature trails offer different starting points when deciding which themes will shape your stay.
