Prievidza offers a range of starting points for planning your trip: dated features of historic churches, technical and natural history collections, cultural events, and cycling routes. Depending on whether you are especially interested in architectural history, folk traditions, or outdoor activities, you can choose a different focus.

Churches, Architectural History and Technical Monuments

The Piarist Church of the Holy Trinity was consecrated on 19 August 1753. Its double dedication is to the Holy Trinity and the Assumption of Mary. It is described as one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in Central Europe.

The sanctuary of St. Bartholomew’s Church dates from the late 14th century. Vertical sundials dating from 1662 are located on the south side of the church. Visitors interested in the history of buildings can distinguish these two historical dates when looking at the church.

Another subject in technical history is the Rušňové depo. It was declared a national cultural monument in 2005. With its preserved technical equipment, it is considered the best-preserved building of its kind in Slovakia. Its designation as a cultural monument and its surviving technical features go hand in hand: the depot is classified not only by its function, but also by its equipment.

The Zlatá prievidzská cesta is a municipal tourism project featuring two walking tours through preserved architectural monuments and sights, as well as natural beauty spots and notable city landmarks. If you plan to take one of these tours, check locally for the latest information on how it operates.

Museum Collections and Cultural Events

The Hornonitrianske Museum manages more than a quarter of a million collection items across nine specialist groups. Its holdings include extensive invertebrate collections and unique paleontological finds relating to the flora and fauna of the Tertiary period.

Events also offer a range of cultural experiences. The annual Banícky jarmok opens with a mining procession and a mining anthem. The three-day festival also includes the Prievidzský rínok food festival. Individual events may vary from year to year; if you would like to include the jarmok in your trip, plan around the specific event dates.

The Hornonitrianske Folklore Festival showcases folk customs, traditions, songs and dances, traditional crafts, and folk costumes.

Hradisko, Skotňa Park and Cycling Routes

Hradisko is located in the cadastral area of Prievidza, in the Hradec suburb. The andesite rock formation belongs to the Vtáčnik Mountains and is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Upper Nitra region.

At Skotňa Park, you can visit the viewpoint on Mariánsky vršok and work out at an outdoor gym. If you plan to use either of these facilities, check the local conditions in advance.

The six-kilometre cycling route between Prievidza and Bojnice can be ridden in both directions and follows paved paths. As infrastructure may change, it is worth checking local route conditions before setting off.

Another cycling route, described as easy, starts at the entrance to the forest park in Prievidza’s Sever residential district. It initially follows an unpaved track through the forest, then continues along a forest path to the “Klčovňa” forester’s lodge. You can take a first break there or continue riding. Check the local signage and conditions before your ride.
