Nedožery-Brezany: Church History and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Nedožery-Brezany
Visitors to Nedožery-Brezany can choose between cultural history and cycling as distinct areas of interest. The town’s history includes the single-nave Church of St. Helena and Christ the King, as well as the legacy of Vavrinec Benedikt Nedožerský. A 16.3-kilometre cycling route is another option to consider when planning your visit. Sacred architecture, language history and the specific route length appeal to different interests.
Church of St. Helena and Christ the King
The single-nave Church of St. Helena and Christ the King dates from the late 14th century. “Single-nave” describes a church with one main nave and refers to its basic spatial layout. Its furnishings include a red marble baptismal font from the 17th century. During restoration work in 1986, a fresco depicting the Deposition from the Cross was uncovered. The dates refer to different things: the late 14th century dates the church building, the 17th century the baptismal font, and 1986 the uncovering of the fresco. The image depicts the Deposition from the Cross, the moment when Jesus is taken down from the cross. In this way, building history, a dated furnishing and restoration history come together without confusing their respective dates.
Vavrinec Benedikt Nedožerský and the Town’s History
Vavrinec Benedikt Nedožerský is regarded as a humanist, scholar, writer and educator. He was a professor of philosophy and mathematics and wrote the first systematic Czech grammar. A systematic grammar sets out language forms and rules; this work therefore offers a direct insight into the history of the Czech language. Together with his educational work and his two professorships, it adds a broad focus on education and scholarship alongside the church history.
The memorial plaque to Nedožerský is now located on a street named after him. The celebrations “Brána jazykov otvorená” begin at this plaque and take place every five years. If you would like to plan your trip around the celebrations, check the event date in advance. A statue has stood in front of the primary school building since 1968.
Cycling Route and Further Travel Planning
The Nedožery-Brezany–Malá Čausa–Ráztočno–Remata cycling route is 16.3 kilometres long. It starts beyond Nedožery-Brezany in the direction of the Ostrá valley; the stated route runs via Malá Čausa and Ráztočno to Remata. A reservoir is one possible place to cool off during your visit. Check in advance whether it is accessible and what facilities are available. This lets you consider the cycling route and the reservoir as separate parts of your trip, while the church and Nedožerský’s life’s work provide the cultural history focus.
