Valaská Belá – Nature, Craftsmanship and Traditions
Accommodation in Valaská Belá
Valaská Belá combines protected landscapes with a heritage of craftsmanship, folkloric traditions and seasonal skiing. When planning your hotel stay, your preferred focus for the trip can help guide your choice: nature and outdoor activities, cultural history or a winter getaway. The themes range from forests and mountain meadows to traditional glassmaking and folkloric performances.
Landscape, protected areas and tours
The Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area was designated in 1989. Its landscape is characterised by forests interspersed with mountain meadows. The municipality’s cadastral area also includes the privately owned Rysia Nature Reserve. It covers 30.49 hectares and is subject to the highest, fifth level of protection.
The Nitrica is another natural landmark: known locally as the Belanka, the river rises below Homôlka at an altitude of 900 metres above sea level. Valaská Belá offers good conditions for agritourism, hiking and cycling tours. Nature and outdoor activities therefore provide a distinct focus for a stay, alongside the cultural themes.
Winter at the Homôlka ski centre
At the Homôlka ski centre, skiers can use ski terrain served by three dedicated Tatrapoma lifts. The offer is seasonal; snow conditions and operating status vary. Check the current situation before planning your visit.
Chata Homôlka offers accommodation and all-day meals. Confirm availability before your arrival. This makes Homôlka a concrete option for travellers interested in winter activities, while the landscape and cultural themes offer other areas of focus.
Glass and textile crafts
The element of manual glassmaking, “Ručná sklárska výroba,” was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovakia in September 2025. At the Sklený sen open-air glassmaking museum, visitors can watch glass being shaped and blown by hand using traditional techniques. Visits must be arranged in advance because the furnace needs to be heated before glassworking can begin. Check the current arrangements before your trip.
At the Museum of Linen, Weaving and Embroidery, visitors can weave fabric on traditional looms. Exhibited works include handmade dolls in various sizes, colourful carpets, and tablecloths, doilies and placemats connected with folk traditions. Visits should be arranged in advance where possible; confirm the current arrangements before you arrive.
Folklore and local traditions
The Belanka folklore group takes part every year in the summer and winter folklore festivals of Upper Nitra. It also presents traditional programmes on various occasions: at Carnival, during the Carnival procession through the municipality, at the Maypole raising, on Mother’s Day and in Christmas performances. The seasonal folklore festivals and programmes for individual holidays offer different insights into local customs.
Belianska embroidery is also part of the local craft heritage. It was worked in three styles, all of which were also known in the surrounding area. Together with the weaving and glassmaking demonstrations, it shows the variety of craft traditions passed down here.
Church of St Michael the Archangel
The Neoclassical Church of St Michael the Archangel was built in 1800 on the site of an older Renaissance religious building, mentioned as early as 1572. Its tower was incorporated into the new building. The church is in good condition and remains in use; check local arrangements for access.
Whether you are interested in the building’s history, textile crafts, glassmaking or the protected landscape, Valaská Belá offers several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip. When choosing your stay, pay particular attention to seasonal conditions at the ski centre and the need to arrange museum visits in advance.
