Kanianka brings together a range of visitor interests: swimming and water sports are available at the dam, while local history and religious buildings shape the village’s character. The Malá Magura to the west of the village and the Kaniansky dvojkríž at the highest point of the cadastral area provide points of reference in the landscape. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider water activities, cultural interests and the landscape as separate focuses.

Dam and Landscape

Swimming and various water sports are available at the Kanianka Dam. The surrounding area is also suitable for cycling, running and walking. It is helpful to distinguish between these activities when planning your day: water activities take place at the dam, while cycling, running and walks are associated with the surrounding area.

The Malá Magura rises steeply to the west of Kanianka and belongs to the Strážovské vrchy mountain range. Another feature of the landscape is the Kaniansky dvojkríž, which stands at the highest point of the cadastral area of the municipality of Kanianka. The mountain landscape west of the village and a named point within the municipality offer two different perspectives on the surroundings.

Churches and Their History

The Roman Catholic parish church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the main church of the Kanianka parish. It is located in the village center and is distinguished by its freestanding bell tower. Its location and architectural design give you two specific features to help identify the church in the village landscape.

The building’s history can also be traced through several dates. John Paul II blessed the foundation stone on April 22, 1990. Construction began in May 1992, and the church was consecrated on November 7, 1993. This sequence distinguishes the blessing of the foundation stone, the start of construction and the consecration as three separate milestones in the building’s history.

The Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is another important historic religious building in Kanianka. It was built in 1902 thanks to Štefan Baláž. The first Holy Mass was celebrated there on September 14 of the same year. Masses are currently held in the chapel on Saturdays: every week in summer and once a month in winter. Check the current schedule again before planning your visit around it.

Way of the Cross and Local History

The Way of the Cross in Kanianka is a quiet place of prayer at the foot of the mountain above the new cemetery. It was established in 2020 and comprises fourteen stations marked by large stones. If you plan to visit this religious site, check its condition on arrival.

The original settlement core, known as “stara Kanianka,” lies in the valley of the Kanianskeho potoka. To this day, it retains a traditional linear layout along the stream. This settlement pattern offers a different perspective on Kanianka from its religious buildings: here, the valley and the historic layout along the watercourse take center stage.

Traditional culture also includes past customs and crafts. Earlier generations in Kanianka wore traditional dress mainly for festive occasions, such as weddings or church visits. Some local women describe a distinctive Kanianka embroidery featuring floral motifs, worked in chain stitch or as solid embroidery. These traditional examples show both the festive context of the dress and specific motifs and embroidery techniques.
