Tužina lies on the southeastern foothills of the Strážovská hornatina; the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area extends nearby. For clarity, it is worth distinguishing between the two names: one describes Tužina’s location on the foothills, while the other refers to the nearby protected area. The surrounding forests offer opportunities for hiking; numerous forest trails offer opportunities for mountain biking. Tourists also seek out the route from Tužina to the distinctive village of Čičmany. This means visitors can choose between nature and local history as different focal points for their stay.

Hiking, mountain biking and the route to Čičmany

The surrounding forests of Tužina are the setting for hiking, while the numerous forest trails are suited to mountain biking. If you are planning days outdoors, you can choose between these different activities: exploring the forest landscape on foot or riding a mountain bike on forest trails. Tourists also seek out the route from Tužina to the distinctive village of Čičmany. For travel planning, the activity and destination are therefore separate options: hiking or mountain biking on the one hand, and the route to Čičmany on the other.

Municipal museum and local collection

The municipal museum can be visited year-round. Confirm local visiting arrangements before your trip. The permanent exhibition is housed in a reconstructed residence built in 1905. It includes reconstructed and displayed objects from the collection of Kornélia Richterová and from collections of other residents of the municipality. The museum thus brings together two specific points of interest: the residence and its year of construction, and objects from collections connected with the residents of Tužina.

St. James’s Church: architecture and furnishings

The single-nave Roman Catholic Church of St. James in Tužina is a Baroque church built on medieval foundations. It was constructed between 1788 and 1797 to plans by the Kremnica master builder J. Vogelt. The interior paintings were restored from 2002 through spring 2007. The furnishings include a main altar, a pulpit, a baptismal font, a four-part organ and four candlesticks in the 18th-century Neoclassical style, featuring rich carved wooden decoration. Several art-historical influences can therefore be distinguished: medieval foundations, the Baroque church building and Neoclassical furnishings.

Chapel, Marian column and Hody festival

The Baroque Chapel of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows at the upper end of Tužina was built in 1818. Its Baroque altar features carvings, a Pietà sculpture and two angels from the 18th century. The Marian column stands opposite the church and is surrounded by an intricately carved marble wall. It was erected in 1749 in the Late Baroque style, completely reconstructed by the academic sculptor Dušan Hagara and reconsecrated in 1999. Dating from 1749, the column is older than the chapel built in 1818; the two buildings are distinct, clearly dated landmarks in the local history of religious architecture.

The annual Hody festival is also associated with the church: in Tužina, the second Sunday in September is observed in memory of its consecration. If this tradition is important for your travel plans, check the date for your chosen year of travel.
