Zemianske Kostoľany – Manor Houses and Churches
Accommodation in Zemianske Kostoľany
Zemianske Kostoľany combines its location on the banks of the Nitra with a layered architectural history. Its historical references range from a church with Romanesque origins to a manor house converted into an Empire-style villa in the 19th century. If you consider both landscape and architecture when choosing a place to stay, this combination offers a concrete starting point: the river, the surrounding mountain ranges and buildings from different periods all shape the character of the town.
Riverbank and Mountain Ranges
The town lies on the banks of the Nitra River. To the west, Zemianske Kostoľany is bounded by the southern foothills of Malá Magura; to the east, by the ridges of Vtáčnik. The town’s location thus combines its riverside setting with two clearly distinct directions: the western foothills and the eastern ridges.
Manor Houses and Residential Tower
The Renesančný kaštieľ was built around 1570 and later remodeled; typical Renaissance elements have been preserved. The Renesančný kaštieľ has a Renaissance park, which, according to the municipality’s website, was open to the public as of November 13, 2025. The Karolkin kaštieľ was built in the first half of the 17th century in the Renaissance style and remodeled at the end of the 19th century. The comparison reveals different construction periods and later alterations: Renaissance elements have been preserved at the Renesančný kaštieľ, while the late-19th-century remodeling of the Karolkin kaštieľ is part of its architectural history.
Three dates mark different construction phases of the Kišasonkin kaštieľ: it was built in 1727, extended upward in 1818, and converted in 1836 into an Empire-style villa with an open columned loggia. The Obytná veža was built around 1570 and, with the exception of the Dolné Lelovce district, is the oldest building in Zemianske Kostoľany. It originally served as a residential tower, an unusual function for this type of building.
The kúria and its Vaults
The Jožičkina kúria is a typical example of the traditional residence of the lower nobility. Various types of vaults have been preserved in the single-storey building, including barrel, lunette, Prussian and cross vaults. A barrel vault runs lengthwise; in a cross vault, curved surfaces meet. This brings the diversity of the interior architecture into focus alongside the building’s residential form.
Churches from Different Periods
The religious buildings complement the manor houses with a range of periods and stylistic influences. The Roman Catholic Church of sv. Jána Krstiteľa was built in 1699–1701 in a pseudo-Renaissance and early Baroque style. In clear contrast in terms of age are the origins of Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie in the Dolné Lelovce district: they date from the 12th century to the first half of the 13th century. Two dates close together mark different milestones for the Evangelical articulated church in Zemianske Kostoľany: construction was approved in 1734, and the church was consecrated in 1736. An old cemetery surrounds the Evangelical church.
In the broader context of Upper Nitra, several manor houses, including those in Zemianske Kostoľany, bear witness to the region’s rich history.
