Vrchteplá: Remembrance, Landscape and Trails
Accommodation in Vrchteplá
Vrchteplá offers a variety of reasons to stay: you can explore the remembrance of the Slovak National Uprising, discover the landscape of the Súľovské skaly, or plan a hiking or cycling route. If you are looking for a hotel in Vrchteplá, this overview of local highlights can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.
Memorial Sites and History
The memorial to those who fell in the Slovak National Uprising stands on Hôrka Hill above the village centre. Partisans who fell in the surrounding area were buried on the hill. The memorial’s current form dates from 1978. Celebrations marking the Slovak National Uprising are held in Vrchteplá every year on 29 August.
The Pamätná izba SNP is located in the former primary school building, which still also serves as a chapel. Since 1979, visitors have been able to learn more about the events of the Slovak National Uprising there. The memorial site on Hôrka and the Pamätná izba are therefore two different stops for exploring the history of the uprising.
Landscape and Hiking
Vrchteplá lies within the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area, close to the Manínska tiesňava National Nature Reserve and among the notable Súľovské skaly. Manínska tiesňava is also the subject of an educational trail: it includes the “tiesňava pod Vrchteplou” section and is laid out as a self-guided circular hiking route with twelve stops. The full route is 15.8 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of five to six hours. The route is classified as passable year-round, although seasonal conditions may vary locally. Check conditions before setting out.
The first section with information boards towards the gorge below Vrchteplá follows a state road. It is suitable for bicycles and pushchairs; take normal care along the road section. This section therefore differs in purpose from the complete circular hike, for which a walking time of five to six hours is stated.
Cycling Routes and Views
A cycling route follows the Hoľazne ridge, right along the boundary between Vrchteplá and Plevník-Drienové, to Havrania skala. From there, you can enjoy a wide-ranging view of Veľký and Malý Manín, the Javorníky, the Mikšovská Reservoir, and Bytča and its surroundings.
An MTB connection runs from Prečín via Bodiná, Vrchteplá, Kostolec, Plevník-Drienové and Lávka to Mikšová, where it joins the Vážska cyklomagistrála. In Prečín, it connects with the Rajecká cyklomagistrála. Check the route markings before setting out. The Považský hrad–Manínska Tiesňava cycling route also leads to Vrchteplá; from the signpost in the village, it continues along the blue-marked cycling route.
Another route runs from Vrchteplá to Súľov: it follows asphalt and gravel to the saddle below Havrania skala, then descends through the Čierny potok area to the state road to Súľov-Hradná. As surface conditions can change, it is advisable to check the latest information in advance.
Events and Special Interests
A wreath-laying ceremony takes place at the SNP memorial on 30 April to mark the liberation of Vrchteplá, as part of a recurring tradition. The Maypole raising in Vrchteplá also takes place on 30 April. The Jilemnického 25-ka hiking march is also held in Vrchteplá in April; check the details for the current edition before travelling.
The night sky provides another connection to the area: since 1977, astronomers have gathered around the memorial near Vrchteplá to observe the Perseid meteor shower. Alongside commemorative events and trails, astronomical observations offer another distinct reason to visit.
For planning purposes, the offerings differ in specific ways: the educational trail has a stated circular route, distance, number of stops and walking time; the cycling connections can be assessed by their locations, links and viewpoint. Choose according to your preferred focus and the time you have available.
