Kostolec: Natural Monument, Gorges and Trails
Accommodation in Kostolec
Discover Kostolec through its nature, outdoor activities and local history. A prominent landmark is the PP Bosmany natural monument above the village; the Kostolecká Gorge and various hiking and cycling routes are also nearby. When planning your trip, you can choose between rocky landscapes and views, specific routes and traces of the village’s history.
Natural Monument and Gorge Landscape
The PP Bosmany natural monument was designated above Kostolec in 1994 and covers an area of 7.335 hectares. It consists of three rock towers and a rock massif behind them, which rises to 659 metres. From there, you can look out over the Manínska Gorge and the Kostolecká Gorge. The rock monument with its views and the named gorges thus offer distinct points of interest in the landscape around Kostolec.
The Kostolecká Gorge is located near Kostolec, is about 500 metres long and covers almost 30 hectares. It has been a nature reserve since 1970. Its rock overhang also makes it a climbing area. PP Bosmany and the gorge are distinct natural sites: the monument is defined by its rock towers and massif, while the gorge is also characterised by its rock overhang and use for climbing.
Hiking and Cycling
The 16-kilometre hiking route from Považská Teplá to Súľov passes through the Kostolecká Gorge, Kostolec and Vrchteplá. It links several stops along one route. Trail conditions and markings can change, so check the notices before setting out.
Another option when choosing a route is Route 2305, which passes through the Kostolecká Gorge and then continues to Kostolec. This blue-marked leisure mountain biking route is 17 kilometres long and includes sections on asphalt and gravel. It is rated easy and can also be completed by families with children. Surfaces can change, so take this into account when planning.
The 16-kilometre hiking route and the 17-kilometre mountain biking route are two distinct options. When comparing them, the similar distances are not the only factor to consider: they differ in how you travel, with one being a hiking route passing several named stops and the other an easy leisure route for mountain biking.
Local History and Archaeological Traces
The writer Peter Jilemnický worked as a teacher in Kostolec from 1932 to 1936. A memorial plaque and a bust in front of the former school building commemorate him. This site connects a specific period in his life with a visible memorial in the village.
Archaeological sites are also part of Kostolec’s history. They include settlement traces from the Palaeolithic, around 22,000 BC, and the Neolithic, around 2,000 BC. This timespan shows that the sites relate to different prehistoric periods.
Finds at a Late Stone Age dwelling site on the edge of a rock face beside the road to Kostolec included pottery, a loom weight, copper spirals, radiolarite and obsidian. The obsidian found in Kostolec originated in the Vihorlat area. It points to long-distance contacts among the population as early as the 3rd millennium BC.
