Pružina: Cave, Calvary and Hiking
Accommodation in Pružina
Three different themes can shape your travel plans for Pružina: Pružinská Dúpna Cave, the Calvary in the grounds of St. Žofia Parish Church, and hikes to the Strážov Waterfalls. If you are looking for hotels in Pružina, nature, local history and outdoor trails can help you decide what kind of stay you want. For practical planning, consider the approximate hiking time, the route to the waterfalls and the option of arranging a cave tour.
The cave: geology and wildlife
Pružinská Dúpna Cave was formed through the long-term erosion of Mesozoic limestone by underground water. Over time, the water acted on the rock and shaped the cave. Bats mainly use it as a winter roost. Two distinct aspects of nature are therefore central here: the cave’s slow geological formation and its seasonal importance to bats.
The route to the cave starts in the Pružina-Priedhorie district and follows the Karol Brančík educational trail. A tour of Pružinská Dúpna Cave can be arranged with the chair of the Strážovské vrchy Caving Club. If you would like a tour, coordinate it with him.
Hikes and landscape
Pružina can serve as a starting point for hikes to the Strážov Waterfalls. Allow about 3.5 hours; the duration may vary depending on conditions and your route choice. Near the Sedlo pod Strážovom saddle, a trail branches off from the yellow-marked hiking route and leads to the waterfalls. As trail markings can change, check the route before setting out.
The Strážovský Stream also rises near Pružina. After flowing 100 metres over rocky ledges, it plunges over two waterfalls: the Upper and Lower Falls. The surrounding area also offers opportunities for walks. This gives you the choice between a hike to a named destination and more general walks in the countryside.
The Calvary and local history
The Pružina Calvary is in the centre of the village, on a gentle hill within the grounds of St. Žofia Parish Church. Originally, it comprised eleven Stations of the Cross structures with 18 depictions. These numbers refer to different things: the Stations structures on the one hand, and the depictions on the other. The Calvary includes seven paintings by J. B. Klemens from 1863 and four paintings by K. Švestka from 1880.
The church’s architectural history adds another dimension to this cultural and historical theme: it was originally Gothic and was extended with a presbytery in 1759. The history of the church building and the paintings associated with artists and dates therefore represent two different aspects of local history. The museum exhibition in Pružina also includes a memorial room.
Pružina offers several perspectives for planning your trip: the cave’s geological formation, its role as a winter roost for bats, the approximate duration of hikes, and the art and architectural history in the village centre. You can choose the focus of your stay based on these specific themes.
