Horná Mariková: Culture, Hiking Trails and Viewpoints
Accommodation in Horná Mariková
You can choose a destination for your stay in Horná Mariková based on two sides of the area: its architectural and folk culture, and its trails in the Javorníky Mountains. Modlatín is home to an open-air museum and a historic church; the lookout tower, hiking trails and cycling routes offer other options. This lets you decide whether to spend most of your time at cultural sites, on a hike or on a leisure ride.
Culture and architectural history
In the village district of Modlatín, the open-air museum presents an exhibition about traditional life in the Mariková Valley. It is housed in a three-part wooden house, bringing the building’s design and the exhibition’s theme together. The exhibition is free to visit by arrangement with the relevant staff member at the Horná Mariková municipal office. A guided tour with an ethnologist from the regional museum in Považská Bystrica can also be arranged. Plan ahead and make arrangements for either option.
Also in Modlatín is the Roman Catholic Church of St John of Nepomuk. Its original structure dates from 1765; in 1925–1926, it was expanded with a new section of the nave and a side extension. Its different construction phases offer a tangible link to the area’s history. Ráztoka has a different architectural history: its wooden church is the only wooden church in the district and was built in 1948–1949.
Recurring cultural events include the Marikovské folklórne slávnosti, held in Horná Mariková since 1991. Dates and programmes vary, so check the schedule if you are planning your trip around the festival. The folklore ensemble Žrnovanka is also part of local cultural life. Its performance dates may vary as well.
Views and trails in the Javorníky
Orgoňova Kyčera is a specific viewpoint to include in your tour plans. The lookout tower’s platform is seven metres above the ground. From there, views extend to places including Manínska tiesňava, Súľovské skaly, Žilina and the Low Tatras. The panorama takes in both distinctive landforms and a city.
From the centre of Horná Mariková, you can reach Orgoňova Kyčera either directly via the renovated Hotel „Rezort Mravec“ or by going through the Modlatín Valley and the settlement of Máčkovci. A blue-marked hiking trail also crosses the hill, running from the main ridge of the Javorníky via Malý Javorník towards Považská Bystrica. The Javorníky–Družba educational trail lies within the municipality’s cadastral area and focuses on nature and history. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Cycling routes, winter activities and fishing
Cycling route 8316 from Horná Mariková to Máčkovci is 1.8 kilometres long and designed as an easy leisure route for mountain bikes. It follows asphalt and hard-packed paths. The Horná Mariková–Bahno route is also 1.8 kilometres long and is an easy leisure cycling route on asphalt. Route 8316 is listed as running on asphalt and hard-packed paths, while the route to Bahno is on asphalt. Route 8316 starts near the retirement home at a junction with blue cycling route 2307; the route to Bahno also starts at a junction with this blue route. Check the signs before setting out.
For winter sports, the SKI Ráztoka ski area has three lifts measuring 1,000, 720 and 250 metres. Check seasonally whether the area is open. Ski touring is possible on the Čertov–Horná Mariková–Portáš route; winter conditions vary.
Fishing is another leisure option: Rybník Horná Mariková pond is available for fishing and is stocked with trout, carp and grass carp. Before your visit, check the applicable fishing conditions and rules.
