Záskalie lies in a basin in the Strážovské vrchy mountains and combines a mountain landscape with gorges, rock formations, and marked trails. Manínska Gorge is one reason tourists visit the area: this national nature reserve is known for its bizarre natural rock formations. When looking for a hotel for your stay, the natural attractions and trails that interest you can provide a useful starting point for planning your trip.

Gorges and protected nature

Manínska Gorge is a narrow valley carved by the Manínsky potok stream. Rock walls enclose the valley and reach heights of up to 400 metres. Nearby is Kostolecká Gorge, which is about 500 metres long. It formed when the Manínsky potok stream cut epigenetically into the Drieňovka limestone rocks. The two gorges offer different natural points of interest: at Manínska Gorge, the high rock walls define the valley, while at Kostolecká Gorge, its approximate length and geological formation are the main features.

A nature trail runs through the gorges and continues from Manínska Gorge to Kostolecká Gorge. One of Kostolecká Gorge’s notable features is Slovakia’s largest rock overhang. The rock overhang “Strecha Slovenska” (Roof of Slovakia) is also found at the summit of Dreieck. Rare and strictly protected species in the area around Záskalie include the Slovak pasqueflower and the Apollo butterfly. The gorges, rock formations, and these protected species represent different aspects of the nature surrounding the area.

Hiking route 5585 offers a specific distance: it runs from Záskalie to Pod Veľkým Manínom and is 2.1 kilometres long. The marked ascent of Veľký Manín also starts in Záskalie. The route initially continues as a green-marked trail; later, it connects to a yellow-marked trail. If you plan to make this ascent, check the trail markings on site.

Another destination is Partizánska Cave. The cave is up to 21 metres long and can be reached from Záskalie by a green-marked trail through the forest. A local green-marked route also connects Záskalie with Považská Bystrica; most of it runs through the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. The details about route 5585, the ascent of Veľký Manín, and the connection to Považská Bystrica describe different options: a stated route length, a sequence of trail markings, and a connection between two places.

The dates relate to different aspects of the area’s history: 1379 to the first written mention, and the 18th century to the municipal symbol. This motif adds a distinct historical point of interest to the natural features of the area.
