Stupné: Cycling Routes and Local History
Accommodation in Stupné
Stupné lies between Jasenica and Brvnište in the Papradnianska dolina valley. The Javorníky Mountains border the valley to the north. Cycling routes through several villages, the history of the village, and religious buildings give the destination a range of different features. If you are looking for a hotel in Stupné, these themes can help you tailor your choice of destination to your planned stay.
Cycling Routes Through Stupné and the Valley
The Vážska cyklomagistrála Udiča–Považie is a 46-kilometre cycling route marked in blue. It passes through Stupné and also runs through Papradno, Brvnište, and Jasenica. Another cycling route is 35 kilometres long and marked in blue and yellow. It runs from Považská Bystrica through Jasenica, Stupné, Brvnište, and Papradno. This allows two specific differences to be compared: the longer route is marked in blue, while the shorter one has blue and yellow markings. Both descriptions take in Stupné, but differ in total length and markings.
The landscape also combines natural and cultural features. In this part of the Papradnianska dolina, traditional log-house architecture is scattered across the Kopanici. The valley area and historic building styles offer a different perspective on the surroundings than the routes alone. For cyclists who also consider the landscape and local architecture when choosing a destination, these are distinct features to explore.
Local History and Religious Buildings
Stupné was first mentioned in writing in 1416. Local tradition links the village’s name to a move: the settlement moved from the area known as “Spád” to a more spacious location in the valley. This tradition thus connects the development of the village with its location in the valley, without reducing the beginning of the village’s entire history to the year of its first written mention.
The chapel in Stupné is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows and was built between 1980 and 1982. It houses a wooden statue of Our Lady of Sorrows dating from 1805, which is described as a cultural monument. The building and the older statue thus represent different periods in the local history of religious buildings: the chapel was built in the late 20th century, while the statue comes from an earlier period.
A Way of the Cross leads from Stupné to the summit of Žeravica. There, the summit terrace features an artificial terrace and a simple earthwork fortification; it is relatively easy to reach from the north via a ridge. The Žeravica area is also noted for the presence of rare plants and animals. In Stupné, the stations of the Stations of the Cross on Calvary comprise fourteen wooden and metal stations. Three large wooden crosses stand at the final station.
Theatre, Events, and Local Facilities
The amateur theatre tradition in Stupné began in 1935 under the direction of Ondrej Balej. Under his direction, the amateur theatre staged the comedy “Strašidlo.” The Ivana Piško Theatre performed three times at Scénická žatva in Martin. These details give the village’s history a cultural and performing-arts dimension in addition to its buildings.
At the Stupniansky hodový jarmok in 2025, visitors could see a depiction of the traditional form of housing in Stupné. The programme for that edition included traditional handicrafts and home-cooked food; the programme may differ at future editions. A description updated in 2016 connects the natural amphitheatre in Stupné primarily with the Hodový jarmok and other local cultural events. A rest area for tourists was also built in the Potoky district.
You can assess Stupné based on specific interests: the cycling routes offer two routes through the village that differ in length and markings, while the chapel, Way of the Cross, and theatre history reveal other sides of the destination.
