Veľké Lovce: History, Museums and Countryside
Accommodation in Veľké Lovce
Veľké Lovce lies on the western slope of the Pohronská pahorkatina. The eastern part of the cadastral area is covered with oak and acacia forests. The two details describe different scales: the hillside location situates the village within the landscape, while the reference to woodland applies specifically to the eastern part of the cadastral area. When planning your trip, it is therefore important to distinguish between the general landscape setting and the specifically identified forest area.
History and Memorial Sites
The earliest surviving mention of the village dates from 1236. Another historical landmark is the Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (Materstva Panny Márie), dating from 1907. Several centuries separate these dates; they mark different aspects of the village’s history: the early written mention of the village and a specific church building from the early 20th century.
A monument to the victims of the First and Second World Wars stands in the local cemetery. It was created by academic sculptor Jozef Kliský. The cadastral area also contains the ruins of the former Baroque church and Pauline monastery of Mariánska Čeľaď (Máriacsalád). The cemetery and the ruins point to different aspects of history: remembrance of the war victims on the one hand, and a former religious site on the other.
The Lóťanské folklórne slávnosti is a local folk festival in Veľké Lovce.
Museums and Visitor Planning
The House of Folk Dwelling (Dom ľudového bývania) is a private museum and is listed as a national cultural monument. You can arrange a visit with its founder, Jozef Galbavý; the visit lasts about 25 minutes. You can arrange a visit to the local Veľké Lovce Museum by phone in advance; the museum is not open every day. It occasionally hosts exhibitions of embroidery, woven hemp textiles and lace. These themes make a visit especially interesting for guests interested in textile crafts and the materials used.
Cycling and Hiking Routes
Zákostolie in Veľké Lovce is a stop on the eighth stage of the cycling series “Cyklopotulky medzi Žitavou a Hronom”. This stage focuses on lost religious monuments. The stop therefore connects a specific place with a clearly defined theme of the cycling series. Before visiting Zákostolie, check the access arrangements in advance; it is also worth checking the route conditions before setting out.
The three-day route “Trojdenná motanica okolím Podhájskej” offers a different way to explore the area. It runs from Vrstevník via Veľké Lovce to Lótsky kríž and continues on to Čechy. The sequence of places shows where Veľké Lovce lies along the route: the village is between Vrstevník and Lótsky kríž, from where the route continues to Čechy. The difference between the two options is useful when choosing: the cycling series includes a themed stop, while the hiking route focuses on the sequence of places and its three-day format. The key question is whether you would rather follow a theme or a specific route.
