Dolný Ohaj combines religious sites and archaeological traces with cycling routes of varying lengths and levels. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of interests: the Church of St. Imrich and the Chapel of Blessed Sister Zdenka, the history of the village, or a cycling route ranging from a short leisure ride to a moderately difficult sports route. Viticulture and community events are also part of the local character.

Churches, a chapel and archaeological traces

A plaque at the rectory commemorates national politician Juraj Holček, who worked there from 1848 to 1865. Another religious site is the Chapel of Blessed Sister Zdenka. It is considered the first chapel in Slovakia dedicated to her, and it houses relics of Sister Zdenka.

The Church of St. Imrich has its own building history: the neoclassical church was built from 1872 to 1876 on the site of a Gothic church that had been destroyed in 1708. Two pieces of furnishings that can be dated add to the picture: a Baroque wooden baptismal font from the mid-18th century and an altarpiece from 1928 by T. Ozoray of Nitra. The construction period and furnishings thus point to different historical periods.

The archaeological finds also date back a long way. Dolný Ohaj has a Neolithic settlement of the Želiezovce culture. A grave find with fluted pottery from the Eneolithic period is associated with the Baden culture. Archaeological graves also attest to a Slavic settlement and a burial site from the Great Moravian and post-Great Moravian periods. These different traces give your exploration of the village a broad historical timeframe.

Cycling routes with different character

Cycling route No. 5103 Okruh Dolný Ohaj is an easy green leisure route: it is 2.1 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 13 metres. Attractions along the route include the local church and the Calvary complex. This makes it possible to combine a short cycling route with two cultural stops.

Cycling route No. 8104 Dolný Ohaj–k meandrom leads to the natural attraction Meander Chrenovky Natural Monument. A considerably longer option is cycling route No. 2102 Veľký okruh mikroregiónu Termál. It passes through Dolný Ohaj, is classified as a moderately difficult sports route, measures 55.6 kilometres in total and has an elevation gain of 669 metres. The route passes through ten municipalities.

The comparison is therefore between a 2.1-kilometre leisure route and a 55.6-kilometre sports route with different difficulty ratings. Check the route details for routes 5103 and 2102 locally before setting off.

Community life, wine and events

Specific event dates offer a glimpse into the village’s cultural life. On 23 May 2026, Púť na vinohrady was held as a foot pilgrimage to the Dolnoohajské vinohrady vineyards. Later on 23 May 2026, a mass was held at the statue of St. Urban in the vineyards. The 13th edition of the Ohajský Kenderáš music festival took place in Dolný Ohaj on 18 July 2026.

Celebrations on the eve of 1 May include decorating and raising a Maypole in front of the cultural centre, as well as singing together with the Juraj Holček choir. The choir performs traditional regional songs, Slovak folk songs and Christian songs at community events and at regional, national and church occasions.

Traditional wine production is also part of the local character. The programme for Ohajské fašiangy in February 2015 combined a demonstration of a traditional village home butchering with tastings of local butchering specialities and wine from Dolný Ohaj. If you are interested in a seasonal festival, plan your visit around the dates announced for that year.
