Šarkan combines a rural setting with its own castle and church history. It is also a stage point on a regional cycling route. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Šarkan, these themes can help you plan: the landscape, historic buildings and cycling each offer a different focus.

Rural Landscape and Winegrowing Tradition

Šarkan lies in the southeastern part of the Pohronská pahorkatina hill region. The built-up area is surrounded by extensive arable land, vineyards with wine cellars, grassland, and areas and linear features of landscape greenery. In the northern part of the cadastral area are the marshy floodplain meadows of the Paríž stream; the stream flows through the cadastral area and joins the Hron. To understand the area, it is worth distinguishing between the land around the built-up area and the floodplain meadows in the northern part of the cadastral area.

The nearby Parížske močiare protected area covers 590 hectares and is under the authority of the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area. The municipal coat of arms also reflects the area’s agricultural character: the grape motif represents the municipality’s winegrowing traditions in particular. Together, the vineyards, wine cellars and grape motif link winegrowing to both the landscape and the municipality’s symbolism; the stream and floodplain meadows add the water-shaped side of the cadastral area to this picture.

Church, Castle and Cultural Monument

The Roman Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary in Šarkan dates from 1810. As of August 2026, the church is a filial church of the Gbelce parish. The castle in Šarkan was built by the Koller family in 1827. The castle’s remains include a unique 19th-century wall; the fence on the east side of the castle is adorned with round towers. A late Baroque Pietà with a cross, dating from the second half of the 18th century, is listed in Šarkan as an immovable cultural monument. The dates and architectural features provide several distinct reference points for the history of the area.

Stage 5 of the Regional Cycling Route

As of August 2026, Stage 5 of the regional cycling route runs from Štúrovo through Kamenica nad Hronom, Kamenín, Bruty, Svodín, Šarkan, Ľubá, Belá and Nána, and back to Štúrovo. The entire stage is 65.4 kilometres long and has 335 metres of elevation gain. These figures apply to the whole stage, not to a section around Šarkan. The cycling stage is not suitable for road bikes. If you plan to include it in your trip, take the distance, elevation gain and this suitability note into account together, and check the route information before setting out.

A Hotel with a Historic Connection

The reconstructed and expanded manor house opened in 2014 under the name HOTEL CHÂTEAU ŠARKAN. HOTEL CHÂTEAU ŠARKAN has a restaurant, a bar, a lounge and a conference room; facilities may change. This lets you consider the manor house’s historic connection and the facilities relevant to your stay as separate criteria when choosing a hotel.
