Nová Vieska – Wetlands and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Nová Vieska
Nová Vieska lies on the southern edge of the Pohronská pahorkatina. To the north are the marshes of the Paríž stream; to the south, the ridge of the uplands. Two themes therefore stand out when planning your trip: protected landscapes and birdlife on the one hand, and church architecture, remembrance, geological history, and folklore on the other.
Wetlands and Protected Nature
Parížske močiare has been designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance since 1990; since 2008, it has also been designated a protected bird area. A total of 169 bird species were recorded there between 1954 and 2014. Parížske močiare is the only site in Slovakia where a regular and confirmed breeding population of the Moustached Warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon) has been reliably recorded. Protective regulations apply to visits: do not disturb wildlife, leave no litter, and do not pollute the surroundings. Check local requirements before your visit.
The Drieňová hora Nature Reserve covers almost four hectares and extends across the cadastral areas of Nová Vieska and Gbelce. It is home to warmth-loving grassland species that have replaced the downy oak forests lost through human intervention. The nature themes differ clearly: Parížske močiare focuses on wetlands and birdlife, while Drieňová hora is about the vegetation history of a protected grassland.
Church, Remembrance, and Geological History
The Reformed Church of Nová Vieska was originally built as a Toleration Church in 1787 and restored after a fire in 1874. Its hall-like interior has two galleries; the tower and buttresses also date from 1874. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. If you are considering a visit, check its current status locally and ask about the possibility of visiting.
Lajos Gulyás’s birthplace became the community centre. A memorial room dedicated to him was established there in 2005; the community centre is dedicated to preserving local folk culture as a memorial house. If you are interested in visiting, ask about the options in advance.
The Nová Vieska palaeontological site adds a geological timescale to the area’s history. Fossilised faunal remains have been found there, including the last mastodons and the first mammoths. The site is considered one of the most important in Central Europe for the transition from the Pliocene to the Pleistocene. It is also intended to serve, at a minimum, as a Slovak stratotype for a new Quaternary boundary; the transition in question dates back around 2.6 million years.
Folk Traditions and Cultural Events
The Csemadok organisation in Nová Vieska is dedicated to preserving folk traditions and organising cultural events. A Hungarian folk ensemble performs Hungarian folk dances and songs: each year, it learns a new choreography featuring dances from various regions and performs at numerous local and international cultural events. If you plan to attend an event during your trip, check the specific dates in advance.
