For planning your trip to Parkan, thermal waters, cultural history and cycling offer a range of possibilities. In Štúrovo, these include the Vadaš Thermal Resort, historic memorial sites and cycling stages of varying lengths and difficulty. This can help you decide which topics are especially interesting for your stay.

Thermal Waters and Vadaš

A thermal spring with a temperature of 39.3 °C rises on the northern outskirts of Štúrovo. The Vadaš open-air swimming pool and leisure complex was built around it on an area of 24 hectares. Vadaš Thermal Resort has eight outdoor and five indoor pools, including the Lagúna wave pool, as well as six water slides. The resort also includes a lake for boating and pedal boating. The pools, slides and lake activities offer different ways to enjoy the complex. As resort facilities can change, check the latest information before your visit.

Museum, Gallery and Memorial Sites

The Štúrovo City Museum is a local museum focusing on ethnography and local history. It has three halls for permanent exhibitions, one hall for temporary exhibitions and an outdoor exhibition in the courtyard. The museum is housed in a building erected in the 19th century by the Franklovci family. Its exhibition themes bring together local history and ethnography, with different rooms set aside for temporary and permanent displays.

The Július Barta City Gallery also presents changing exhibitions, with works by local and foreign artists changing monthly. The gallery has been open to the public since 1993. If you would like to plan your visit around a particular exhibition, check the current programme, as exhibition schedules can change.

Several memorial sites tell stories from different periods of the town’s history. The Rozprávajúca skala sculpture in the park in front of the town hall commemorates the town’s first written mention. A bronze equestrian statue depicts the Polish King Jan Sobieski; it was unveiled in October 2008. The military cemetery and monument on Ul. sv. Štefana date from 1947 and were declared a national cultural monument on 17 July 1963. It is the only immovable national cultural monument in Štúrovo. The former synagogue at Hlavná 32 is also among the town’s cultural and historical sights.

The Mária-Valéria Bridge connects Štúrovo with Esztergom. The iron bridge opened on 28 September 1895, was rebuilt in 2001 and was ceremonially inaugurated on 11 October of the same year. Its history can thus be summed up by two clear dates: its original opening and its inauguration after reconstruction.

River Landscapes and Cycling Routes

The Hron flows into the Danube near Štúrovo. The town is surrounded by the Kováčovské kopce, whose highest peak is Burda at 395 metres. The Danube riverbank is a popular walking area for locals and tourists. Near the Mária-Valéria Bridge, a viewpoint bench on the riverbank also serves as a photo frame.

The stated route lengths and trail features can help you choose a cycling stage: the first stage of the Ostrihom–Štúrovo cycling route is 16.8 kilometres long and starts in Štúrovo’s pedestrian zone. The second stage, Štúrovo–Kamenný Most–Vŕšok–Nána–Štúrovo, covers 23.8 kilometres and follows the dykes along the Danube and Hron. The third stage, via Kamenica nad Hronom, Chľaba, Leľa and Bajtava, returning to Chľaba and Štúrovo, is 42.7 kilometres long and suitable only for mountain bikes.

The cycling route around Burda is a separate route. Part of it follows a forest track that can be slippery after rain and is difficult for road bikes; both the start and finish are in Štúrovo. When planning, take account of both the trail conditions and the weather. Compare routes by their length and the requirements specifically stated, rather than treating distance alone as an indication of which route is right for you.

October Fair

The Simon and Jude Fair is the only one of the four original fairs to have survived in Štúrovo, and it continues to shape the town’s October festivities. It takes place every year at the beginning of October. If you would like to combine your trip with the fair, check the exact dates and programme in advance.
