Discover Čechy: Landscape, Hiking and Winter Sports
Accommodation in Čechy
Čechy combines a hilly landscape with a pond, seasonal activities and traces of history. The village lies in the hills of the Pohronská pahorkatina at an average elevation of 240 metres. For your travel plans, the cycling route and hiking opportunities, fishing at the pond, and winter activities each offer a different focus. The village’s history and regional habitats also give you reason not to plan your stay around just one season.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
Čechy is 22 kilometres from Nové Zámky. You can reach the village via Route 75, turning off at Semerovo, or via Route 580 from Šurany through Podhájska. Road conditions and routes may change, so check your specific route before travelling. The two access routes offer different reference points to help you plan.
Landscape and Nature
The rolling surroundings and the pond nestled among the hills shape the picturesque view of the village. Together, they provide a natural setting for visitors in every season. Deciduous forests characterise the landscape around Čechy. The pond is also a place for a seasonal activity: during fishing season, it is open to anglers and stocked with carp. If you plan to fish, its limited access during this season is important when choosing your dates.
The Krivé hrabiny Natura 2000 site (SKUEV0086) covers 125.74 hectares. Within the cadastral area of Čechy, it includes plot 793, where protection level 2 applies. Krivé hrabiny was proposed for protection to preserve three habitat types: “Carpathian and Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests” (91G0), “Pannonian-Balkan Turkey oak forests” (91M0), and “Eurosiberian oak forests on loess and sand” (91I0). The names of these forest types give the natural setting a specific context: alongside the hills, pond and deciduous forest, this habitat complex is also part of the surrounding landscape.
Local History and the Church
Čechy was first mentioned in writing in 1419. Several Hussite families had already settled here between 1416 and 1419, during a period of rapid settlement growth. The dates are close together and provide a brief outline of the village’s early history. Another historical trace is the Church of St Peter and St Paul (“Kostol sv. Petra a Pavla”): originally a Baroque church dating from 1735, it was remodelled at the beginning of the 20th century. Čechy thus brings together an early written mention, the settlement of Hussite families and a later building history.
Cycling, Hiking and Winter Activities
A cycling route passes through Čechy and attractive natural scenery. It can also be used for walks and hikes. So if you prefer to get around on foot, you can consider using the same route for these activities. Check locally before travelling to confirm that the cycling route is available.
In winter, what is possible depends on the conditions at the time. The municipality has a 200-metre-long ski lift, which operates when snow conditions are suitable. There is a snowmaking system on the ski slope. When the lift is running, evening skiing is also possible from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm; operating hours are seasonal and may change. Check them before your visit.
The pond is opposite the ski slope. During the winter months, if it is frozen, you can use it for ice skating and playing hockey. The surrounding area of Čechy also has terrain suitable for cross-country skiing when there is enough snow. The requirements differ: the ski lift depends on suitable snow conditions, skating and hockey require a frozen pond, and cross-country skiing requires suitable snow cover in the surrounding area. These differences can help you coordinate your winter activities with your travel dates.
