Šurianky: Park, History and Radošinka Observation Tower
Accommodation in Šurianky
Šurianky offers a clear thematic framework for travelers who want to get to know a place’s historic buildings and landscape features. Key themes include the protected Šuriansky Park behind the manor house, the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a plague column and the Radošinka Observation Tower. The buildings mark different points in history, while the park, stream and tower draw attention to other aspects of the place. This gives you a choice for planning your trip between local history, parkland and the observation tower, without any one of these themes replacing the others.
Park and Landscape
Šuriansky Park is a protected historic park behind the manor house. It is home to 33 tree species, including many non-native species. This mix adds a specific botanical perspective to the park’s historic character. If you are especially interested in green spaces for their tree population, this diversity offers a distinct way of experiencing the park.
Šurianky lies in the Bojnianska pahorkatina subregion of the Nitrianska pahorkatina, within the Podunajská pahorkatina in the Podunajská nížina. This sequence runs from the subregion through larger landscape units to the broader classification within the Podunajská nížina. The Perkovský potok, an important water-management stream, flows from north to south through the built-up area. The geomorphological hierarchy places Šurianky in its broader setting, while the stream describes a specific course within the built-up area.
Church and Plague Column
The first written record of the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria in Šurianky dates from 1297. It was rebuilt on old foundations in 1637. The church has a single nave and a Baroque design; two side sections were added later. “Single nave” describes the basic layout with one main nave, which was supplemented by the later side sections. The early mention, the rebuilding and the later additions can thus be understood as distinct stages in the building’s history.
There is also a plague column in Šurianky. It dates from 1773 and was reconstructed in 2002. The two dates serve different purposes: the first dates the column, while the second refers to its reconstruction. For the church, by contrast, the first written record and the rebuilding on old foundations stand alongside one another as separate historical milestones.
Radošinka: Structure and Access
The Radošinka Observation Tower is 15 metres high and built entirely of wood. It stands on the boundary of the cadastral areas of Čab, Nové Sady and Šurianky. The tower can be reached via an unpaved access road located about 350 metres from a class III road. The height and access details answer different questions: the 15 metres refer to the structure, while the approximately 350 metres describe the access road’s distance from the class III road. This lets you distinguish the tower’s height from the access information when planning your trip.
