Mojmírovce brings together several themes to consider when planning your trip: castle and architectural history, ecclesiastical and technological history, and winemaking. Its historical landmarks range from the construction of the castle in 1721 to technical equipment dating from 1926. There is also a museum with old prints and sculptures inspired by local legends.

Architectural history, a museum and technological heritage

Imrich Huňady had the castle in Mojmírovce built in the Baroque style in 1721. After a fire, it was later remodelled in the Neoclassical style. Its history thus includes both a Baroque construction and a later Neoclassical remodelling, with the fire marking the transition between these phases. The castle also contains a vaulted brick wine cellar, bringing an architectural and a wine-related aspect together in one building.

The Church of St. Ladislaus adds another undertaking to the architectural history: the local landowner Ladislav Huňady commissioned it and brought in craftsmen from Vienna.

The Mojmírovce Regional Museum is housed in the renovated summer residence of Prince Aldobrandini, also known as the “little castle”. The museum preserves 305 rare old prints. The “little castle” is the summer residence, not the castle built by Imrich Huňady; the two names therefore refer to different buildings. If you are planning a museum visit, check visitor access before you arrive.

In the park by the museum are ghost sculptures inspired by local legends. They add a distinct feature alongside the architecture and print collection: local folklore is represented here through sculpture. The mill in Mojmírovce offers a different historical focus. It retains most of its original technical equipment from 1926, so the emphasis at this building is on its preserved machinery.

Another historical connection leads to Urmín: the first public horse races in Austria-Hungary took place there in 1814.

Winemaking and tastings

The vineyards of Víno PD Mojmírovce now cover 133 hectares. The winery currently uses grapes exclusively from its own vineyards. Winemaking adds a distinct, agriculture-focused theme to the architectural history.

Visitors can sample the winery’s products in the tasting room at Víno PD Mojmírovce. If you are planning a visit, confirm that visitors can be accommodated before you arrive. This is separate from the annual wine tasting organised by the municipality in the cultural centre in spring. Check the specific date for the year you plan to visit.

First decide which theme matters most to you for your trip; the information on architecture, technology and tastings gives you concrete options to consider.
