Jelšovce combines a long archaeological history with a Memorial House, a church and outdoor activities. You can focus your stay on the archaeological site and its long history of settlement, domestic cultural heritage, or a nature trail and recreational areas. Guided tastings add a culinary experience to the options.

River Landscape and Hilly Terrain

Jelšovce lies in the southeastern part of the Nitra Loess Hills, in the floodplain and on the terrace of the Nitra River. The municipal area includes hilly terrain and a floodplain. Its unforested surface consists of Upper Tertiary deposits covered by loess and alluvial sediments. The soils include chernozem and alluvial soils.

Archaeological Traces Spanning Millennia

The oldest settlement traces at the Jelšovce archaeological site date to around 4500 BC. Settlement there continued almost uninterrupted through the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Hallstatt period and La Tène period. Systematic investigations uncovered 495 settlement features and 447 inhumation graves across an area of about two hectares.

The Early Bronze Age cemetery at Jelšovce shows traces of the Nitra, Únětice and Maďarovce cultures. It is considered the largest cemetery of its period excavated to date in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and also holds a leading position in Central Europe. The long sequence of settlement phases and the cemetery’s significance offer different perspectives on the archaeological history of the area.

Memorial House and Church

The Jelšovce Memorial House preserves the material heritage of the ancestors in three rooms—a chamber, kitchen and living room. This includes traditional costumes, furniture, pictures, period interiors and a spinning wheel. While the archaeological site tells the story of settlement phases and graves, the Memorial House focuses on objects and spaces from domestic life. A visit can be arranged by appointment with a local contact.

Another aspect of local history is the Roman Catholic Church of St. Mary Magdalene. It is considered the most significant monument in the municipality of Jelšovce.

Nature Trail, Recreation and Sport

A nature trail runs through Šibeje Park, which also offers a range of activities for children and recreational areas. In the ADIGAŠ green sports area, the municipality brought a formerly neglected football field back into use and added facilities for children, young people and adults in the surrounding area. The park and sports area offer different kinds of leisure activities: a nature trail and recreation in one, and a football field and activities for several age groups in the other.

Culinary Experiences and Tastings

Pálenica Jelšovce offers culinary experiences and guided tastings. Fruit brandy can also be distilled there from your own fruit. This means guided tastings and turning your own fruit into a distillate are two different experiences on offer at Pálenica Jelšovce.
