Veľký Cetín lies on the eastern bank of the Cetínka River. The highest point in the village is 209 metres above sea level, in the vineyards between Veľký Cetín and Paňa. From Veľký Cetín, the view stretches in every direction. The view describes a broad spatial perspective; the elevation pinpoints the highest point in the vineyards between the two villages.

Cycling routes and course

The Ponitrianska Cycling Route (route 019) passes through Veľký Cetín: it enters the village below the embankment and then returns to the river embankment. Route 8131 Paňa–Veľký Cetín also passes through the village as far as the Nitra, where it ends at a junction with the Ponitrianska Cycling Route.

Route 8131 is a 4.3-kilometre, easy road cycling route on asphalt, suitable for recreation. The 43.1-kilometre Dolné Krškany–Branč–Poľný Kesov–Cabaj–Čápor loop, route 2118, is also easy and suitable for recreation, but is classified as a mountain biking route on asphalt and paved paths. Route 2118 initially follows the Ponitrianska Cycling Route towards Veľký Cetín, then branches off towards Branč. Comparing the two routes by length and type, the 4.3-kilometre road cycling route contrasts with the 43.1-kilometre mountain biking loop; both are rated easy and suitable for recreation. The difference in route type is just as clear: 8131 is the asphalt road cycling route, while 2118 is the mountain biking route, for which both asphalt and paved paths are specified.

Church, memorial and early history

The originally Gothic Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built in 1307. It was renovated in 1692 and rebuilt in 1911. The church’s baptismal font combines a Renaissance foot from the 16th century with a Baroque basin from the 18th century. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The building’s history and the two periods represented by the baptismal font offer different historical points of reference: one concerns changes to the church building, the other Renaissance and Baroque elements in a specific piece of furnishing.

In front of the church, in a park-like area on Kostolná Street, stands a memorial erected in 1993 to local victims of the wars of the 20th century. It was created by sculptor Nagy János. The date anchors the memorial in the village’s history, while its dedication identifies those being honoured.

Archaeological excavations in Veľký Cetín uncovered a Slavic settlement. A La Tène settlement and a Quadi burial ground from the Late Roman Imperial period have also been documented. These finds reach back to different early periods and complement the later dates associated with the church and war memorial with an archaeological perspective on the village. Together with the dated building phases and the 1993 memorial, they span a long period of historical reference points.
