Nitra between culture and landscape

Nitra offers a variety of themes to help you plan your stay: the castle and religious buildings, historical traces on Zobor, and the surrounding landscape and nature reserve. If you are looking for hotels in Nitra, these highlights can help you tailor your trip to your own interests.

Castle, Calvary and religious buildings

Nitra Castle is a national cultural monument. Its Gothic moat is used as an amphitheater during the summer months, when open-air film screenings and concerts are held there. The moat is freely accessible to all visitors.

The Calvary in Nitra comprises twelve neo-Romanesque chapels representing the Stations of the Cross. They are arranged along a path that leads to the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre.

Another architectural landmark is the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Dražovce. The Romanesque church dates back to the 11th century and is one of the oldest religious buildings in Slovakia. Nitra Synagogue adds a much later landmark: the freestanding building in the Moorish-Byzantine style was completed in September 1911. Today, it is used mainly as a concert and exhibition hall. The church dates back to the 11th century; the synagogue was not completed until September 1911, many centuries later.

Zobor: history, views and nature trail

Zobor reveals different layers of history. In the forest around the summit, the stone ramparts of a prehistoric settlement from the Late Bronze Age are still visible. In the 9th century, the Benedictine monastery of St. Hippolytus was founded on Zobor as the first monastery in the territory of present-day Slovakia. From the 11th to the 14th century, the monastery served religious, public-law and cultural functions.

The Pyramída foothill peak of Zobor stands at 553 metres and offers panoramic views of Nitra and the wider surrounding area.

It can be reached by city bus lines 1, 9 and 25; check the current timetable before your hike, as bus numbers can change. The Zoborská lesostep National Nature Reserve is one of the trail’s stations.
