Podbiel brings together cultural history, viewpoints, geology and cycling. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the specific highlights: Bobrova raľa showcases a traditional farmstead, Františkova huta represents industrial history, and Biela skala and Červená skala offer different viewpoints and geological features.

Folk Architecture and Everyday History

Bobrova raľa is a folk architecture monument reserve. It preserves a traditional settlement with farmyards characteristic of the middle Orava region. The site is arranged around open communal courtyards. Outbuildings stand behind the houses, while barns enclose the courtyards in an L shape. The outdoor areas are accessible from public spaces and can be visited independently at any time of day. The interiors are not accessible because they are privately owned.

The Small Ethnographic Museum in Podbiel is housed in a renovated former building of the church school, No. 194. It displays objects once used in Podbiel households, for agricultural work and in the liturgy. The museum also provides information about archaeological finds at Biela skala, the former Zuberec–Podbiel narrow-gauge railway and Podbiel’s industrial history. The museum thus offers insights into everyday life in the past alongside archaeological and technical topics.

Františkova huta and Industrial History

Františkova huta near Podbiel is a national cultural monument and one of the most valuable technical monuments in Orava. The ruins preserve the remains of a factory hall, a blast furnace and several installations, including a hammer mill, inlet and outlet channels, and a blower chamber. The site is 2 km from the centre of Podbiel. You can combine a visit with a walk or reach it by bus.

Viewpoints, Geology and Archaeological Traces

Červená skala is a popular destination for easy walks and offers the best view of Podbiel; the Roháče mountains can also be seen in the distance. It is part of the Carpathian Klippen Belt and consists of limestone formed as deep-sea sediments during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, 195 to 65 million years ago. Fossilised ammonite impressions can still be found near the information board below Červená skala.

Biela skala reaches an elevation of 750 m. In good visibility, a telescope there offers views across the mountains of Orava. A rich variety of mountain flora grows on the plateau below the summit. Biela skala is also home to Hallstatt-period funerary pottery and an archaeological site with 43 urn graves. The viewpoints, plant life and archaeological finds offer different ways to explore the area.

Cycling Routes for Different Ability Levels

In Podbiel, a challenging red-marked cycling route through the Roháčska valley starts at the junction with the road to Roháče. It is 27.5 km long. The blue-marked Podbiel–Zuberec–Oravice–Trstená–Podbiel loop also starts at the same junction. It is 52 km long and suitable for experienced cyclists. The routes therefore differ in length, route type, trail marking and stated difficulty.
