Several river courses meet in Tvrdošín, a town with a remarkable architectural history. The Orava and Oravica, along with their tributaries Medvecký potok and Hldočín, flow through the town. Notable historic sites include the Gothic wooden Church of All Saints and Trinity Square. A stay here combines riverside impressions with art, architecture and religious heritage.

Wooden Church, Conservation Area and Historic Architecture

The wooden Church of All Saints dates from the first half of the 15th century. It received a Europa Nostra award in 1994 and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. Visits are subject to seasonal conditions: during the 2026 summer season, the church was open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except Mondays, from May 1 to September 30. Outside the season, visits are possible by arrangement, with reservations made at least one day in advance. Check visiting hours before your trip.

The Tvrdošín conservation area encompasses Trinity Square and the adjoining historic townscape, including the wooden church. The historic center was declared a conservation area on June 1, 1991. The square is home to a late Baroque Marian column, created in the late 18th century in the workshop of the Belopotocký stonemason family from Oravský Biely Potok. The square, church and surrounding historic buildings give the town center a clear architectural coherence.

The town hall is also a distinctive part of the town's architectural history. It was built between 1872 and 1875 on older foundations dating from the 18th century and is considered the finest and best-preserved monument from the second half of the 19th century. On the north side of the churchyard stands a sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the late 18th century, created by stonemasons from the Bielopotocký family. The different periods of construction are reflected in several specific buildings and works of art.

Riverside Landscape and Protected Nature

The Orava also shapes the landscape through the Tvrdošín balancing reservoir, whose stated volume is 2.9 million cubic meters. The small-area CHA protected area along the Orava River includes parts of Tvrdošín on both sides of the river and is subject to the fourth level of protection. The Orava and its tributaries also form a Ramsar wetland of international importance. These connections give the riverside landscape an important ecological dimension, which, alongside the historic attractions, is part of the town's character.

There are several options for a bike ride. The Štefanov nad Oravou–Dlhá–Malatiná mountain bike route leads to the Márie Medveckej Gallery. From there, you can continue along the balancing reservoir; another option takes you across a bridge over the Orava into the center of Tvrdošín. A different route runs below the Roháče into the Skorušinské vrchy. It is rated as moderately difficult and, thanks to its good surfaces, is suitable in places for road bikes, even though it runs away from state roads.

Chapels, Pilgrimage and Local Traditions

The Chapel of Saint Anne stands in the district of Oravice. It was built between 1817 and 1820 and restored in 1864. Oravice's natural amphitheater also features in the events calendar: the town holds the Folklore Festival Under Osobita every year; in 2026, it celebrated its 35th edition there. Dates and programs for future editions may change, so check the latest information if you are planning your visit around the festival.

Another religious destination is the Skalka Rock Chapel. Carved into a rock around 1870, it later became a pilgrimage site. Worshippers gather there for prayers, litanies and the Stations of the Cross; a Mass is held on the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The Church of the Sacred Heart was built in the Krásna Hôrka district in 1890, and Mass is celebrated there regularly on Sundays. These places reflect different forms of religious life in Tvrdošín and its districts.

The Michalský jarmok is another of the town's established traditions. At the 2025 edition, visitors found handicrafts, traditional specialties, handmade products and refreshments. The selection and dates may vary from one edition to the next. If you are planning your trip around the fair, check the details for the specific edition.

Swimming and Relaxation

The municipal indoor swimming pool is open year-round and combines sports and swimming facilities with relaxation. The wellness area includes a Finnish sauna, a steam sauna, an infrared sauna, a whirlpool and loungers. Alongside the historic and religious attractions, it offers a place to swim and unwind. As opening hours and facilities may change, it is worth checking the latest information before a specific visit.
