Tvrdosin between art, cultural heritage and nature
Accommodation in Tvrdosin
Tvrdošín lies in northern Slovakia at the southeastern tip of the Orava Basin, between the Skorušinské Mountains and the Orava Uplands. The town offers a range of options for planning your trip: the Márie Medvecká Gallery in a Neoclassical manor house, the Skalka pilgrimage site, the limestone gorge in Juráňova Valley, as well as cycling and cultural activities. If you are looking for a hotel, you can weigh up these options and decide whether art, religious heritage, landscape or an event date should shape your trip.
Art and Cultural Heritage
The Márie Medvecká Gallery features a permanent exhibition with a selection of works from the painter and national artist’s lifetime oeuvre. Since 1979, it has been housed in a 19th-century Neoclassical manor house. The exhibition comprises 180 paintings and 88 drawings; the selection may change with the exhibition design. Since 2000, temporary visual art exhibitions have been shown in the attic rooms of the Ateliér. The gallery thus combines a permanent retrospective with an exhibition space for changing art presentations.
The Skalka pilgrimage site dates back to a chapel carved into the rock around 1870. Prayers, litanies, Stations of the Cross devotions and a Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows are held there; the site also includes a shelter and an access road. The religious buildings represent different periods: Skalka dates back to the chapel from around 1870, while Tvrdošín’s oldest church monument complex dates to the first half of the 15th century and was remodeled in the Renaissance style in 1650–1654.
Landscape and Trails
The nature trail in Juráňova Valley is located in the protected area of TANAP. Its route leads through a one-kilometer-long limestone gorge, equipped with paths and benches. A striking canyon with water-carved hollows and small waterfalls defines the gorge. From a regional perspective, Oravice is an additional recreation center set in mountain scenery, offering hiking, cycling and winter sports. Route A of the nature trail in Oravice has 22 stops and is 14.6 kilometers long. The gorge in Juráňova Valley and Route A in Oravice are two distinct nature attractions, each with its own features.
Cyclists can choose from routes with different reference distances. The Tvrdošín section of the Kościelisko–Witów–Oravice–Tvrdošín cycling and hiking trail is 14.7 kilometers long. Tvrdošín is the last listed town on the “Below the Roháče Mountains” cycling route, which runs for a total of 52.5 kilometers through the Skorušinské vrchy. The 14.7 kilometers refer to the Tvrdošín section of the first-mentioned trail, while the 52.5 kilometers refer to the entire “Below the Roháče Mountains” route. This distinction helps differentiate the section length from the total route length.
Festivals and Urban Facilities
The town of Tvrdošín traditionally organizes the annual Folklore Festival under Osobitá in Oravice, dedicated to preserving folk traditions. The program includes traditional children’s games, songs and dances; individual events may vary from year to year. The Michalský jarmok is a traditional fair in Tvrdošín, held annually at the end of September. At the 2025 edition, offerings included handmade goods, traditional specialties, handcrafted products and various refreshments; these may vary at future editions. If your travel dates are tied to an event, check the dates and program before your trip.
K-PARK is located in the Medvedzie residential area, between residential buildings 50, 48 and 13. Its features include an outdoor table tennis table, a bouldering wall, skateboarding elements, bicycle racks and a basketball hoop; the facilities may change over time. The modular Adelaie pump track is 159 meters long and is located next to the entrance to the municipal technical services complex. The town’s facilities can also be distinguished by their different features: the listed elements at K-PARK and the pump track’s length and location.
