Habovka: Churches, Folklore and Trails
Accommodation in Habovka
Habovka combines sacred architectural history and folklore with signposted trails and routes for a range of activities. If you’re looking for hotels in Habovka, these themes can shape your travel plans: you can focus on local history, explore an educational trail, or consider cycling and mountain trips. The time of year also plays a role in some activities.
Churches, Stations of the Cross and Folklore
The Church of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows is the fourth church on this site. Construction of the current church building began in 1821. The Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene was completed and consecrated in 1856. The Stations of the Cross in Habovka line the path to the cemetery and comprise fourteen chapels. They were completed on June 22 and consecrated on June 26; no year is given for these dates. Their elements are behind protective glass and illuminated from within by energy-efficient LED lamps.
Another way to experience local culture is through music: Vidiečanova Habovka is an annual national folklore competition featuring performances by children and adults. It has been held in Habovka since 1976. If you’d like to plan your trip around this competition, check the event dates for your travel period. This helps distinguish the annual cultural event from the historic buildings that are a permanent feature of the area.
Educational Trail and Recreation Zone
The Cestami minulosti educational trail is 4.22 kilometers long and has seven signposted stops. It connects seven sites in Habovka and two in Hustopeče. Except for the detours to stops 1 and 7, the route follows paved paths and is suitable for walking and cycling.
The OSLY recreation zone includes, among other features, cascades and the Rosary Steps, as well as the areas Na vstupe, V srdci, Slza and Nádej. Access is from Habovka-Stodoliska in the Kubáňovka area. Alongside the educational trail, this gives you other named places to explore; the two areas should not be understood as the same route.
Cycling and the Orava Open-Air Museum
The nearby Orava Open-Air Museum displays more than 50 examples of folk architecture. They are arranged in several regional ensembles at the foot of the Roháče. A cycling route connects Habovka, Bory and the museum before returning to Habovka. Free bicycle service facilities are available along the route: cyclists can inflate tires, tighten screws, adjust brakes and repair punctures; the facilities can be used at any time.
Another circular route leads from Habovka to Bobrovecká dolina and back. From Habovka, it runs in the direction of Oravice. This route and the connection to the open-air museum offer different options: one heads toward Bobrovecká dolina, while the other connects several named places, including the museum. This lets you combine an additional regional cultural stop with a cycling route without treating the two routes as one and the same.
Mountain Hikes and Winter Cross-Country Ski Trail
The circular route around the Roháč Lakes passes through Roháčská dolina, by six mountain lakes and the Roháč Waterfall. From Habovka, take a bus via Zuberec toward Zverovka. Since conditions in the mountains can vary, take them into account when planning your hike.
For winter, a 12-kilometer machine-groomed cross-country ski trail is described as a loop in the Habovka–Medzi Bory–Zuberec Brehy–Orava Open-Air Museum area. Grooming depends on snow conditions. This means that the mountain hike and the ski trail also require different planning: for the hike, changing mountain conditions matter, while for cross-country skiing, snow conditions are key. Also check the dates of the folklore competition for your trip.
