Vitanova – Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Vitanova
Vitanová combines local history with nature: the Oravica flows through the village, while historic buildings and protected areas offer further points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Vitanová, you can plan your trip according to whether you are more interested in the village’s history, hikes in the surrounding area, or both. Some of the features described are in Vitanová, while others are explicitly outside the village.
Historic Traces and Buildings
The settlement of Vitanová was founded in 1552 on a cleared area called “paszeky Vitanova”; a Šoltýstvo was established at the same time. A notable testament to the village’s history is the Column of Saint Roch, created in 1770. It is a folk stone carving in the rustic Baroque style and a national cultural monument.
The Roman Catholic Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is also part of the village’s architectural history. It was solemnly opened in 1932. Its altars were made by Master Dlugopolský from Trenčín. In the lower cemetery is the grave cross at the tomb of former village judge Vojtašák. Dating from 1851, it bears reliefs of Saint Martin, Saint Andrew, and an unknown saint.
Another architectural example is a preserved log house in Vitanová. It is built from massive beams and retains its original openings, as well as a wooden portal with a round-arched entrance. Together with the column, church, and historic grave cross, it offers a varied look at religious art and architectural forms.
The Oravica and Protected Nature
The Oravica flows through Vitanová and is a tributary of the Orava. It belongs to the “Rieka Orava a jej prítoky” Ramsar Site. The watercourse is associated with dippers, kingfishers, and otters.
In the southern part of Vitanová’s cadastral area, the territory of Tatranský národný park extends into Tichá dolina, with the third level of area protection. The national nature reserve NPR Osobitá also lies within the national park’s territory in the cadastral area; it is subject to the fifth level of area protection. The two protection levels indicate different protection regimes within the area.
Hiking and Nearby Destinations
Vitanová and its surroundings offer opportunities for hiking in nature, including trails near Oravice. South of Vitanová lies Juráňova dolina, at the confluence of Bobrovecký potok and the Oravica. It is described as an easy walk through a gorge with beautiful views.
Oravice is eight kilometers from Vitanová. It has thermal baths that are open year-round. This makes it possible to distinguish Vitanová’s local history and nature from a separate, clearly named destination nearby. If you mainly want to explore the area on foot, the trails mentioned and Juráňova dolina offer different points of interest: trails near Oravice on the one hand, and a gorge destination south of the village described as an easy walk on the other.
Routes for cycling are also indicated. Within the built-up area of Vitanová, cycle paths are planned along existing local roads toward neighboring municipalities and the Oravice recreation area. Outside the village, the two-way routes continue along existing field roads.
Lift and Ski Slopes
The Vitanová–Vrchdolinka chairlift is listed as being 965 meters long, with a vertical drop of 243 meters and a capacity of 2,400 people per hour. Check the lift’s operating conditions before your trip. The listed ski slope length for Ski Vitanová is 4.25 kilometers. Before visiting, it is advisable to check the ski area’s current configuration.
