Revúcka Lehota: Church, History and the Miková Reservoir
Accommodation in Revúcka Lehota
Revúcka Lehota lies in the southeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, on the left side of the Muránska Valley. Most of its cadastral area is situated on a terrace upland; to the north, this gives way to narrow strips of hill country and lower mountains. Beech trees predominate in the surrounding forests, alongside birches, oaks and hornbeams.
Landscape and the Miková Reservoir
The Miková Reservoir lies within the cadastral area of Revúcka Lehota and is used for recreation and fishing. When planning a visit, it is important to note the regulations in the upper section: the area by the inlet is designated as a CHRO, where fishing is prohibited all year round. General use of the reservoir and this restriction therefore apply to different areas.
The terrain around the village also has several distinct features: the terrace upland covers most of the cadastral area, while narrow transitions to hill country and lower mountains extend to the north. The surrounding forests, dominated by beech, complement this landscape; birches, oaks and hornbeams are also interspersed.
Evangelical Church and Memorial
The Evangelical church was completed and consecrated in 1793. It is the only cultural monument in Revúcka Lehota. Its furnishings include a Rococo altar with a pulpit dating from the second half of the 18th century. The church therefore brings together different periods: its furnishings date from the 18th century, while the building’s completion and consecration are recorded as taking place in 1793.
The village also has a memorial to the victims of the Second World War. Together with the church, it represents two different aspects of cultural heritage: sacred architecture and remembrance of the war dead. If you are interested in local history, you can consider these topics separately when planning your visit rather than treating them as a single attraction.
Local History and Traditional Activities
The settlement was established around the 14th century under Wallachian law. Historically, the people of Revúcka Lehota were engaged in livestock farming. The production of linen and cloth is also among the traditions associated with the village. Other historical activities included charcoal burning and the production of homemade fruit brandy.
These crafts and livelihoods add an economic dimension to the village’s history alongside its architecture: livestock farming, textile production, and the processing of wood and fruit represent different activities of its residents. They are historical topics distinct from the reservoir’s current uses or local events. When planning, you can choose between built heritage, traditional work and the area’s landscape.
Events with Specific Dates
The table tennis tournament has a long tradition in Revúcka Lehota. The 2023 edition was the 28th, and a traditional tournament was also held in 2024. These two years offer a specific glimpse of the continuing tournament tradition without suggesting a date for another year.
Other established events are associated with specific dates. On 13 May 2023, Revúcka Lehota commemorated the 78th anniversary of the end of the Second World War with a traditional bonfire at Dolinka. On 1 July 2023, a traditional Children’s Day and Sports Day were held at the local football pitch. Children took part in games and competitions; activities for adults included volleyball, shooting at goal, throwing a rolling pin for distance and tug-of-war.
The Martinská zábava is also considered a long-standing tradition. On 11 November 2023, there was live music by the band Relax from Vlachovo, two dinner options and a raffle. This event, the bonfire and the Children’s and Sports Day describe specific occasions from 2023; they are not details of a current events calendar.
