Muráň: Castle, Nature Trail and Nature
Accommodation in Muráň
Muráň Castle, the Muránsky hrad nature trail and the Cigánka nature reserve represent different aspects of a trip to Muráň: history, walking and nature. In the wider landscape of the Muránska planina, Veľká lúka adds another dimension to the picture. If you are looking for hotels for a trip to Muráň, you can first decide whether to focus on the castle and local history, a walk or the landscape. Two practical visiting requirements should also be included in your plans: the nature trail is reserved for pedestrians, and museum visits require advance registration.
Muráň Castle: History and Dimensions
Muráň Castle stands above the village of Muráň and is considered the third-highest castle in Slovakia. A written record from 1271 refers to it as “castrum Mvran”. The year refers to this record; the ruins are almost 360 metres long and 96 metres high. The historical reference and the structure's dimensions are two separate aspects: one provides a point in time, while the other measurements convey the scale of the ruins.
Nature Trail and Nature Reserve
The Muránsky hrad nature trail begins in Muráň; its first stop is beside the municipal office. The trail is exclusively for pedestrians, is 6.5 kilometres long and has a total elevation gain of 530 metres. Take both figures into account when planning and check the route details before setting out. This way, you will keep both the distance and the stated elevation gain in mind.
The Cigánka rock rises above Muráň to 938 metres above sea level. Cigánka, including the castle grounds, was declared a national nature reserve in 1984. More than 330 species of lichen grow on the castle walls, rocks and tree bark within the reserve. These locations show the different surfaces where this diversity can be found, giving the nature theme its own focus alongside the castle's history.
The Muránska planina Landscape
Veľká lúka is the largest meadow on the karst plateau of the Muránska planina. A stud farm built in 1950 stands at its northern end. Horses are kept year-round in natural conditions and graze freely in the meadows of the Muránska planina. Alongside the rocks and ruins, this open meadow landscape is another part of the region's natural character. The stud farm and the way the horses are kept provide different details: one is a building with a stated year of construction, while the other describes a year-round form of animal husbandry.
Planning a Visit to Muráň
To visit the Múzeum Muráň, you must register two days in advance with the municipal office in Muráň. Register your visit in good time and confirm the arrangement before your visit.
Preparation for the nature trail and the museum differs: for the trail, its length, elevation gain and restriction to pedestrians are important planning details. For the museum, advance registration is required. If you plan to include both in your trip, arrange museum registration separately from your route planning.
