Mokrá Lúka offers several specific points of interest to help you plan your trip: church and local history, floodplain and river landscapes, protected plants, the Hvarná voda mountain spring, cycling and a seasonal fair. You can choose the focus of your stay based on culture, nature or the event season.

Location and Landscape

Mokrá Lúka lies in the Muránska Valley below Mount Kohút, in the southeastern part of the Slovenské Rudohorie. The town is situated on a floodplain and a terrace. A stream flowing through the town empties into the Muráň River. The valley and mountain set the broader geographical context; the floodplain, terrace and watercourse add to the landscape setting of the town. This combination of location and terrain gives you specific natural landmarks to guide your trip planning.

Churches and Historical Landmarks

Two churches provide distinct historical reference points in the town’s religious history. The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary dates from the first quarter of the 18th century and was originally Baroque. Its rich Baroque furnishings include a coffered ceiling with ornaments and flowers, an organ, an altar and a pulpit. The church is in good condition and continues to be used for religious purposes.

The Evangelical Toleration Church was built in 1785 after Emperor Joseph II issued the Patent of Toleration. It is a national cultural monument and is located on the Gothic Route, whose historical heritage visitors can explore. The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, with its Baroque furnishings and continued religious use, can be compared with the Toleration Church, which is associated with the patent and the Gothic Route. The dates help place the histories of the two buildings in context.

Local History and Nature

An earlier historical reference point is 1557: in that year, Mokrá Lúka had two iron hammers and three smelting furnaces. These different types of facilities make the connection with ironworking concrete. This local history significantly predates the 18th-century church buildings and adds another historical period to the picture of Mokrá Lúka.

Protected plant species in the surrounding forests include the Turk’s-cap lily, the broad-leaved marsh orchid, the long-leaved helleborine, the bird’s-nest orchid and the mezereon. Hvarná voda is a mountain spring in the forest above the mill. Its water is used as pleasant-tasting drinking water, and people visit it in both summer and winter via well-trodden paths. Nature here thus centres on protected forest plants and a spring used for drinking water and visited in different seasons.

Cycling and Seasonal Events

Construction of the Mokrá Lúka–Revúcka Lehota cycle path has been completed. The Mokrenský bosorátsky fair is held annually in the run-up to Christmas, usually around St Lucy’s Day. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with the fair, check the date for the year you plan to visit. This lets you factor the seasonal event into your plans.
