In Tornal'a, you can choose from several themes for your trip: the mineral water of Morské oko beach, the Zoltánka City Park recreation area, churches with different architectural styles, and cultural events held in certain months. When planning your stay, you can decide whether swimming, nature, architecture or a suitable event date should take priority for you.

Morské oko: Swimming and geology

Morské oko beach uses untreated mineral water directly from the Morské oko spring. The water is suitable for swimming without chemical treatment and is particularly suitable for intensive swimming and hydrokinesiotherapy with a trainer. The beach covers just under two hectares.

Morské oko also has a geological feature: it is an artesian groundwater outflow that has formed a natural crater with a diameter of 60 metres. Within Morské oko is a flooded fissure 38 metres deep. Cave divers from across Central Europe meet at this natural formation. Thus, the same place name highlights both the use of the water at the beach and the distinctive natural formation.

Zoltánka City Park and its distinctive features

Zoltánka City Park, a place for recreation, lies on the outskirts of Tornal'a. Its history dates back to the 13th century. The park has two plane trees estimated to be about 350 years old; there is also a replica of a small castle on a rocky outcrop.

The park's history, its old plane trees and the castle replica give the place distinct historical and landscape features. The castle is explicitly a replica, while the plane trees are established trees that are part of the park. If you would like to include a park and its individual features in your travel plans alongside the water, Zoltánka offers a distinct theme to explore.

Churches: architectural styles and differences in age

The Reformed Church in Tornal'a is a single-nave building, originally Gothic, with a polygonal termination and a projecting tower dating from the 15th century. In the district of Králik stands a single-nave, originally Early Gothic church with a polygonal termination and a projecting tower, dating from around 1300. The buildings can be compared through their early architectural history; the church in Králik is dated to an earlier period.

Two 20th-century buildings also shape the architectural landscape. The Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a single-nave Neo-Gothic building from 1931. Its presbytery has a polygonal termination, and the tower projects from the building. The Evangelical Church is a single-nave Functionalist building from 1932 to 1933; its presbytery ends in a semicircle, and its tower also projects from the building.

The dates allow for a straightforward chronological comparison: the church in Králik, from around 1300, is followed by the Reformed Church from the 15th century, then by the two buildings from 1931 and 1932 to 1933. Their stylistic descriptions also differ: originally Early Gothic and Gothic, Neo-Gothic, and Functionalist. Single-nave describes a building with one nave; polygonal and semicircular termination describe two different shapes at the end of the presbytery.

Cultural events by time of travel

Regular cultural events in Tornal'a include the Days of Hungarian Culture in January. Tornaľské kultúrne leto, the cultural summer, is regularly held from April to October. October also brings the Day of Traditions, an international folklore festival.

City markets are scheduled for April, October and December. The event calendar also includes the Tornaľský pivný festival beer festival, also called Tornaljai sörfesztivált; it is scheduled for September. The timeframes mentioned therefore differ considerably: the Days of Hungarian Culture take place in January, while the cultural summer programme runs from April to October, and other markets and festivals are assigned to individual months. If your trip depends on a particular market or festival, check the exact event dates in advance.
