Revúca: History, Culture and Routes
Accommodation in Revúca
When planning a stay in Revúca, you can focus on different themes: the history of the First Slovak Gymnasium, cultural attractions and routes with different starting points. For your trip planning, it helps to consider the city’s history and tours as separate topics and keep in mind the details about each destination and route.
School History and Historic Sites
The Museum of the First Slovak Gymnasium is housed in the building of the First Slovak Gymnasium. It presents the history of the Slovak Evangelical Gymnasium from 1862 to 1874. The First Slovak Gymnasium in Revúca opened on September 16, 1862, so its opening date falls at the beginning of the period covered by the museum. The museum offers long and short guided walks around Revúca; both require booking at least three days in advance.
The Evangelical parish house is also part of the city’s history: from the 1820s onward, it became an important place in the Slovak national revival movement in Gemer and Malohont. A commemorative plaque to Samuel Reuss and his sons is located on its façade. It is registered as a national cultural monument and commemorates the first collectors of Slovak folk tales. Another plaque on the parish house commemorates Pavol Emanuel Dobšinský’s work there as an Evangelical priest, folklorist, editor, poet, translator, teacher and playwright.
The Gothic church in the centre of Revúca was built as early as the beginning of the 14th century. The presbytery contains a Late Gothic stone sacrament house with a wrought-iron grille from the 15th century. Revúca thus brings together different periods: medieval church architecture and evidence of a later educational and cultural history.
Cultural Attractions and Discoveries
At Litterra, visitors are allowed to touch, try out and create the exhibits themselves. The museum area is divided into four pavilions, which bring to life stories of words, writing and images, as well as the journey to the stars. Litterra transforms historical, cultural and material heritage into an experiential space; its hands-on approach sets it apart from simply viewing the exhibits.
The fairy-tale sculptures of Revúca are located at places connected with the city’s history. They depict scenes from literary works by the storytellers Gustáv Reuss and Pavol Dobšinský, which have a direct connection to Revúca or the Gemer region. At Krutohlav, visitors can sit in the airship’s balloon basket. The online game Hviezdojed starts at the tourist information centre in Revúca and takes place in different parts of the city. These attractions offer different experiences: literary themes, an interactive exhibit and a digital game format.
Routes, Views and Tours
The observation tower on Šturmanova hora offers views of Revúca, the peaks of the Slovak Ore Mountains and the entire Muráň Valley. One access route leads from Strelnica to the tower along a 4.1 km paved forest road. The starting point and route length are provided to help with orientation; from the observation tower, the view takes in both the city and the surrounding landscape.
The 4 km Gemerská zelená cesta offers a different route. It starts at the square in Revúca, passes the railway station towards the former spa and runs over embankments and engineering structures of the unfinished Gemer railway line. The route is intended for pedestrians, cyclists, families with children and Nordic walkers. Unlike the route to the observation tower, this one focuses on the path through the city and the structures of the unfinished railway. Revúca is also a starting point for summer and winter tours in Muránska planina National Park. When planning, you can therefore choose between a viewpoint, a route along railway remains and tours in a national park.
