Accommodation in Ratková
Location and landscape
Ratková lies in the southeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, on a floodplain and a terrace area in the valley of the Západný Turiec. On both sides of the watercourse, the municipality encompasses a hilly landscape characterised by oak forests. This means that two distinct aspects of the town can guide your orientation: its location in the valley and its wooded hills. When looking for a hotel, you can already decide whether historic buildings, the landscape or a cycling trip will be your main consideration when choosing a destination.
Ratková’s landscape setting is clearly distinct from its architectural history: the floodplain and terrace area lie in the valley, while the municipality’s hills on both sides of the watercourse are characterised by oak forests. When choosing a destination, you can weigh this natural setting alongside the cultural and historical attractions; the two focus areas describe different aspects of Ratková.
Architectural history and heritage zone
Ratková’s historic centre has been protected as a heritage zone since 1995. Several individual buildings and memorials have their own dates. The former Evangelical school is a Neoclassical building dating from 1818. The town hall is also Neoclassical; it dates from 1827. The two buildings were built nine years apart, making it possible to compare structures with different functions but the same stylistic classification. Ratková is also home to a memorial to D. Bachát dating from 1940. The years 1818, 1827 and 1940 date the school, town hall and memorial; 1995, by contrast, is the year the historic centre was designated a protected heritage zone. This distinction provides a timeline: the buildings and memorial have their own dates, while the protection status applies to the town centre.
Evangelical church and bell tower
The Evangelical church represents an older architectural period. Built between 1520 and 1540 in the Late Gothic style, it forms part of the Gothic Route. Its presbytery features a Gothic ribbed net vault. The freestanding bell tower is a separate building next to the church: it was built in 1786 in the Baroque-Neoclassical style. The church complex thus allows you to distinguish between the buildings, their styles and their dates: the church is Late Gothic, while the adjacent tower was built more than two centuries later. If you would like to visit the interior of the Evangelical church, contact the caretaker, Bohuš Palúša, in advance and arrange an appointment. Make these arrangements before including an interior visit as a firm part of your trip.
