Višňové can be understood through its geographical location and the Reformed church, the municipality’s only cultural monument. If you are looking for a hotel in Višňové, the local history, sacred architecture and landscape offer different points of reference for the focus of your stay.

Location and landscape

Višňové lies where the southern foothills of the Revúcka vrchovina meet the Juhoslovenská kotlina. The village is also in the southern part of the district, on the left bank of the Turiec. Another geographical description places Višňové in the Slovenský kras, on a terrace in the valley of the Západný Turiec and Drieňovský potok. These descriptions use different scales: the larger landscape regions, the riverside location and the valley area.

The cadastral area is predominantly hilly, with a surface of limestone and andesitic pyroclastics. Oak forest covers only the eastern part of the cadastral area. These landscape details describe the village’s location as well as the terrain, bedrock and vegetation within the municipality. The terrace indicates its position in the valley, while the hills, rock and forest describe the character of the cadastral area.

The Reformed church

The Reformed church is the municipality’s only cultural monument. This single-nave Classicist building, with a segmental termination and a projecting tower, dates from 1834. “Single-nave” describes a church with one main nave; the segmental termination and projecting tower are other features of its design. The church can therefore be identified by its plan, termination and tower, not just by its year of construction.

The interior features a Prussian vault and a wooden Protestant gallery with painted coffering and plant motifs. The tower has a wooden arcade and is topped with a Baroque cupola. The building, interior and tower offer different architectural details of this cultural monument. If you would like to see inside the church, check in advance whether visits are possible.

Local history

One clearly dated period in the village’s history spans 1938 to 1945, when Višňové was annexed to Hungary. Historical forms of the name also offer a glimpse into the village’s recorded history.

Višňové has been recorded since 1296 under historical forms of its name: Wysnow (1296), Visnyo, Wisnyo and Wysnyo (1328), Wysnye (1487), Wissnowa (1773) and Višňové (1920). This sequence includes several spellings from different centuries. Alongside the political turning point, you can consider these names another way to explore the municipality’s history.

The work of the residents is also part of the history of everyday life: they were engaged in livestock farming and carting. Thus, the village’s history includes not only political changes and name forms but also past occupations. Carting refers to transporting goods by horse-drawn vehicles; livestock farming and transport are historical activities here.
