Kameňany can be explored from two distinct perspectives: through medieval church art and through the karst landscape above the village. If you choose a destination based on its specific cultural and natural features, this contrast provides clear guidance. The church foregrounds architectural history and murals; on the plateau above Kameňany, the focus is on bowl-shaped sinkholes and a karst spring. Historic crafts, theater history, and a local specialty add further facets to these themes.

Church and Medieval Murals

The Evangelical church dates from the mid-13th century and has Romanesque foundations. Inside, it preserves frescoes from the first half of the 14th century and from the 15th century. The motifs include a depiction of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus and Saint Anne, known as Metercia. The frescoes thus offer two points of reference in time, while the Romanesque foundations mark the church’s earlier architectural history. The church is also included in the Jelšava medieval mural trail. Its architectural form, visual art, and different periods make it a specific reference point for Kameňany’s medieval religious art.

Further Architectural and Cultural History

Opposite the church stands the historically significant Neoclassical building of the former Latin school, which is designated a cultural monument. A Rococo-Neoclassical bell tower from the early 19th century also stands beside the church. These named buildings reflect different styles: the former school is Neoclassical, while the bell tower combines Rococo and Neoclassical elements. This comparison adds later architectural forms to the medieval foundations and frescoes.

The cultural history extends beyond the buildings. Kameňany historically had a pottery tradition. A Slovak amateur theater was active from 1866 to 1871—a clearly dated chapter, distinct in time from the church’s long history. Iron ore deposits were found around Kameňany; the extracted iron was once processed in steelworks. Crafts, theater, and ore processing thus stand alongside religious architecture as different historical traces. One local specialty of Kameňany is a cornelian cherry distillate, adding a culinary reference to its cultural themes.

Karst Landscape Above Kameňany

The Kameňany karst landscape is a plateau above Kameňany and is considered the most interesting karst area in the Jelšava Karst. It features large, bowl-shaped sinkholes with diameters of up to 600 meters. At the foot of the landscape lies the Hlavište karst spring, with an average discharge of 20 liters per second. The diameter and discharge describe different aspects of the karst: the scale of its landforms and the spring’s average water flow. The landscape can therefore be understood through both its sinkholes and its water.

A Section of the Cycling Route

On the Kameňany–Tvrdošovo cycling route, the section toward Rákoš initially follows an asphalt road. After about 1.5 kilometers, the route turns left onto an asphalt forest track. The change from road to forest track and the approximate distance to the turn make it easy to plan this part of the ride. Check the current condition of the section before setting out, as conditions can change.
