Hucín lies in the eastern part of the Slovak Karst. The village offers several specific points of interest to help you plan your trip: its valley location, protected trees, traces of local history, local events and a recommended cycling route through Southern Gemer. The topics range from local history and natural features to a cycling route that connects Hucín with the wider Gemer region.

Location and nature

The village lies on a terrace in the valley of the Muráň and Rybník streams. The floodplain in the western part of the municipal area is forested, while limestone hills shape the landscape in the south. The terrace and stream valley describe the village’s location, while the floodplain and limestone hills are distinct parts of the municipal area. This gives you three geographical reference points: a valley location, a forested western part and hills in the south.

Next to the Hucín kindergarten are two protected horse chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) and a protected western plane tree (Platanus occidentalis L.). The Slovak register of protected trees lists all three. They are protected for their cultural and educational value; the trees also have scientific, landscape and aesthetic importance.

History and culture

The former distillery building was converted into a local museum. The community centre in the former distillery building houses a permanent exhibition of historical clothing from the village and household utensils. If you would like to visit the exhibition, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

The family manor house currently serves as a kindergarten and cultural centre. The catacombs next to the manor house are also among Hucín’s attractions.

The Reformed Church dates from the first half of the 14th century. In the area of the church tower is a late Renaissance tombstone dating from 1681, bearing the coats of arms of the Giczei and Bessenyey families. The church’s medieval origins and the much later-dated tombstone mark two distinct periods in the village’s history.

Pottery, once practised by the village’s residents, is also part of Hucín’s history. It adds a craft dimension to the buildings and exhibition of historical clothing and household utensils. Cultural interest thus extends from architectural traces to former aspects of everyday life.

Events and activities

Sports days are regularly held in Hucín in summer. The tradition of St Nicholas celebrations has also been revived. On 15 March, celebrations are held in connection with the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. The events take place at different times: the sports days are seasonal, while the revolution commemoration is held on a fixed date. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the current dates in advance.

Hucín lies on the recommended cycling route through Southern Gemer; check the current signage before setting out. At the wider regional level, Slovak Karst National Park offers a variety of hiking opportunities. This gives you two distinct ways to plan: a specific route connection to Hucín and regional hiking opportunities.
