Ovcar Banja: Thermal Waters, Monasteries and a Gorge Landscape
Accommodation in Ovcar Banja
Ovcar Banja brings together the protected landscape of the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge, thermal waters, monasteries and trails along the West Morava. When planning a stay, visitors can choose among several distinct highlights: learning about nature in the area, historic religious sites and outdoor activities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Ovcar Banja, this overview can help you identify the places and activities that matter for your trip.
The Landscape of the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge
Ovcar Banja is located in the Ovčar-Kablar area of exceptional landscape value, surrounded by rivers, lakes and extensive green areas in the Ovčar and Kablar mountains. Ovčar reaches 985 metres, and Kablar 885 metres. The gorge is protected as a landscape and natural area of exceptional importance and is classified as Category I. It is also part of Serbia’s ecological network and designated as an IBA and Emerald site. These protected-area designations form part of the landscape’s character, alongside its waterways and forested mountains.
Monasteries, a Cave and History
The Ovčar-Kablar Gorge is home to ten monasteries and two holy sites. Blagoveštenje Monastery stands on a rise above the settlement of Ovcar Banja and preserves the Blagoveštenje Gospel, dating from 1372. This links a specific manuscript to the gorge’s broader monastic heritage.
Another religious site is Kađenica Cave, on the right bank of the West Morava, one kilometre upstream from Ovcar Banja. Its entrance has been made accessible. In the main chamber, with its suggested stalactite formations, the cave also serves as a sacred memorial site. The monastery and the cave offer different points of reference: one above the settlement, the other on the riverbank.
Thermal Waters and Nature Centre
The thermal waters of Ovcar Banja are 35 to 38 °C. There is evidence that they were used to treat people from Roman times through the Middle Ages and the Ottoman period, and into the 19th century. A measurable property of the waters thus sits alongside a long history of use.
The Nature Centre is located in the centre of Ovcar Banja. It displays specimens of vertebrate species from the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. One room is set aside for educational activities and presentations. Visitors can learn there about the gorge’s natural values, the importance of environmental protection and the local tourism offer. Biodiversity, environmental education and regional orientation come together here.
On Foot, by Bike and on the Water
Marked hiking trails lead from Ovcar Banja to monasteries and offer views of the forested mountains and the West Morava. One section of Banjski potok is characterised by canyon-like formations, several waterfalls and a large tufa terrace. The waterfalls are about 1.4 kilometres from Ovcar Banja. Because the road is narrow and parking and turning options are limited, visitors should walk the entire distance. Trail conditions may change; check them before your visit.
The marked cycling routes through the gorge also bring together natural and cultural attractions: they pass viewpoints, old roads, tunnels, monasteries, waterfalls, springs, churches and shrines. A boat trip offers a different perspective on the surroundings: visitors can explore the West Morava and Međuvršje Lake from the gorge. Ovcar Banja traditionally hosts a regatta every July. Departure times, operating details, event dates and programmes may change; check the information before making plans.
Ovcar Banja is on the road towards Zlatibor, the M5. When planning a trip, visitors can weigh up the area’s different highlights: monasteries and memorial sites, thermal waters and nature, or trails and activities on the water.
