Rudnik is both the name of a place and a mountain. The town of Rudnik has its own medieval history. The Ostrvica area also brings together natural and cultural features, as well as routes through the mountain landscape. When planning your trip, you can focus on scenery, hiking and cycling, or historical sites. If you are looking for a hotel in Rudnik, these interests can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Mountain Scenery and Routes

Mount Rudnik is the highest mountain in Šumadija. Dense beech, maple, and oak forests cover it, while clear streams and green clearings run through the landscape. Ostrvica is a steep volcanic peak rising to 758 metres. It was declared a natural monument in late May 2009. Its shape, elevation, and protected status give this landscape feature its distinct character.

There are several cycling routes on Mount Rudnik, while hiking trails lead to some of its highest peaks. This gives you a clear distinction when choosing between cycling and hiking: the hiking trails focus on reaching the peaks. A paved road and numerous paths connect the town of Rudnik with other parts of the mountain.

Archaeological and Medieval History

The historical themes range from ancient connections to medieval finds and events. The remains of the Roman temple TERA MATRIS are located on Mount Rudnik. At the summit of Ostrvica are the remains of a fortified town, whose origins are thought to date back to antiquity. The two attributions differ in certainty: the temple is identified as Roman, while the ancient origins of the fortified town are assumed. Visitors can also see old mine tunnels on Mount Rudnik.

The medieval town of Rudnik had a mint during the reign of King Dragutin. The dinar minted there was the first Serbian dinar with a Cyrillic inscription. Another type of find adds to this coinage history: in 2015, a seal matrix belonging to Prince Lazar was discovered during archaeological investigations of the medieval town of Rudnik.

The Church of St. George on Mount Rudnik was the first church built there after 1453; the present-day church was consecrated in 2006. Rudnik became the first liberated territory during the First Serbian Uprising. This church and event history adds further historical points of interest to the archaeological evidence.

Gradovi and Misa also represent different kinds of remains. Gradovi are the remains of a Turkish settlement and fortress on Mount Rudnik. Misa are the remains of a former Islamic place of worship, thought to have been built in the 16th century. The dates serve different purposes: 2015 refers to the discovery of the seal matrix, while the construction of Misa is thought to date to the 16th century.
