When planning a trip to Moravica District, you can explore a range of themes: river landscapes and birdlife, monasteries, museums and musical traditions. The place names can help you consider nature, history and events as distinct travel interests.

Rivers and Landscapes

The Ovčar-Kablar Gorge encompasses 14 kilometres of the Western Morava River and the Međuvršje and Ovčar reservoirs. It is designated an Important Bird Area; 160 bird species have been recorded there to date. This figure reflects the records made so far and may change as further surveys are carried out. Both the gorge’s landscape and its birdlife are therefore a focus.

Near Ivanjica, the Moravica, Studenica and Nošnica rivers each shape the landscape in their own way. These clear, fast-flowing mountain rivers wind through limestone beds and carve narrow, steep gorges around Ivanjica. The stone bridge in Ivanjica offers a different perspective on the Moravica: it has a single arch spanning 25 metres. This lets you consider the river and gorge landscape on the one hand, and a landmark structure on the other, as distinct interests for your trip.

Monasteries and History

The Ovčar-Kablar Gorge is also known as the “Serbian Holy Mountain” because of its ten monasteries and two holy sites. Among the gorge’s monasteries, Nikolje is considered the oldest church; the monastery is located on the slopes of Mount Kablar. This religious history adds a distinct perspective on the gorge to its natural attractions.

Takovo and its historic sites offer another focus for exploring the history of the Second Serbian Uprising. Takovski Grm is a cultural property of exceptional importance and a historic complex with buildings and monuments associated with the beginning of the uprising. The wooden church in Takovo was built in 1795 on the site of an older church dating from 1724 and is considered one of the oldest structures of this type of ecclesiastical architecture in Serbia.

The museum in Takovo is housed in a school building and preserves numerous exhibits on the Second Serbian Uprising. Prince Miloš Obrenović’s residence in Gornja Crnuća has a permanent exhibition featuring copies of photographs, documents and paintings, as well as several original exhibits related to the uprising. In Gornji Milanovac, the Norveška kuća stands as a permanent monument to the friendship between the peoples of Serbia and Norway.

The National Museum in Čačak offers a broader historical overview: its permanent exhibition areas cover history from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages, the monasteries and churches of the Ovčar-Kablar region, and the Čačak region during the uprisings and wars of 1804 to 1941. Exhibition details may change; check the latest information before visiting. By comparison, the exhibits in Takovo focus on the Second Serbian Uprising, while the galleries in Čačak cover several periods and themes.

Musical Traditions and Regional Specialties

The Javor gathering of double-flute players and old Serbian instruments takes place each year on the Sunday before Vidovdan, bringing together musicians from all parts of Serbia. It serves to preserve tradition, authentic folk art and cultural identity. As the date is set in relation to Vidovdan, check the exact event date before your trip.

Another musical highlight is the Dragačevski Sabor trubača in Guča. It was first held in 1961 and has taken place annually ever since. The Trumpet Museum in Guča preserves the history of trumpet playing and the memory of the people and events that contributed to the festival’s development. You can compare the Javor gathering, featuring double flutes and old Serbian instruments, with the trumpet tradition in Guča as distinct musical interests.

At the Dragačevski Sabor, svadbarski kupus, roast meat and homemade rakija are recommended as food and drink. Svadbarski kupus is highlighted as a specialty from Dragačevo. This culinary tradition adds another dimension to the event alongside its music.
