Čačak: Culture, History and City Life
Accommodation in Čačak
Čačak brings together historic sites and cultural attractions, with close ties to the West Morava River and the surrounding landscape. When planning your hotel stay, you can first consider whether museums and monuments, events or trails in nature will shape your visit. The city lies between the Jelica Mountains to the south, Ovčar and Kablar to the west, and Vujan to the north.
Culture, History and Architecture
The permanent exhibition of the National Museum of Čačak is housed in Master Jovan’s Konak, built in 1835. It covers three topics: the region from prehistoric times to the end of the Middle Ages; the monasteries and churches of Ovčar-Kablar and the Čačak region; and uprisings and wars in the region from 1804 to 1941. Early regional history, religious buildings and the history of conflict are thus presented as separate exhibition themes.
The Roman bath in the centre of Čačak dates from Late Antiquity and was declared a cultural monument in 1970. The Four Religions Ossuary Memorial was built and consecrated in 1934. It preserves the remains of 918 soldiers, including 652 Serbian fighters. On Ljubić Hill, the memorial site is dedicated to the fighters and events of the Serbian liberation wars of the 19th and 20th centuries. The oldest monument in the complex commemorates the 1815 Battle of Ljubić and Tanasko Rajić’s deed; parts of it were built in 1938.
Architecture also shapes the cityscape: Čačak is known for its well-preserved, architecturally harmonious neighbourhoods, where traditional building techniques meet elements of modern architecture. The Cultural Centre in the city centre is a venue for cultural events; its building covers an area of about 4,000 m².
Galleries and the Historical Archives
The Risim Gallery holds a memorial exhibition twice a year, featuring 23 of Risim’s paintings created between 1952 and 1983. One ticket also gives you access to the exhibition spaces of the “Nadežda Petrović” Gallery at 6 Cara Dušana Street and the Risim Gallery at 11 Gospodar Jovanova Street. As ticket arrangements may change, check the latest ticket information before your visit.
The Intermunicipal Historical Archives are housed in the former district administration building, constructed between 1875 and 1877. The building is classified as a cultural property of great importance. The entrance area of the Archives contains the Photography Salon, which organises solo and group photography exhibitions. The archival collections are open to the public in the reading room, subject to applicable restrictions. Check the current reading room rules before your visit.
Events and Summer Activities
The poetry event “Dis’ Spring” has been held continuously since 1964. It takes place every year from 10 March, Dis’s birthday, until the end of May in Čačak and the surrounding area; it also promotes the creativity of young authors. If you would like to plan your trip around the programme, check the dates for the relevant edition. The international youth festival DUK combines extreme sports, mural painting, hip-hop culture and music. For DUK, too, it is advisable to check the dates of the specific edition before travelling.
The city beach on the West Morava River is a place to relax and also a venue for entertainment and sporting events. In summer, the Sports Centre organises activities at the city beach and swimming pools. These seasonal offerings complement the city’s cultural and event highlights; the specific programme may change.
Landscape and Trails in the Surrounding Area
The Ovčar-Kablar Gorge protected landscape of exceptional importance lies partly within the territory of the city of Čačak. Nineteen species of wild-growing orchids are known in the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge. Marked hiking trails lead to monasteries and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding nature, wooded mountain ranges and the West Morava River. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.
When looking for a hotel in Čačak, you can use these interests to help plan your trip: the museums, archives and monuments provide a cultural focus, while events, the city beach and gorge trails offer other ways to experience your stay. This can help you first decide which aspects of Čačak are of greatest interest to you.
