Gornji Milanovac can be explored from a variety of perspectives: architectural history, museum themes, events and leisure activities each offer a different focus. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, it helps to first consider the purpose of your trip. The places and themes below give you specific points of reference.

Museums and architectural history

The Museum of the Rudnik-Takovo Region is located at 7 Sinđelićeva Street. The museum’s Brković House is home to the legacy of the Nastasijević brothers and a permanent exhibition on the Obrenović dynasty’s donations and acquisitions. The exhibition themes offer different points of emphasis: here, the legacy of the Nastasijević brothers is presented alongside the history of the Obrenović donations and acquisitions. The house of Ivan Brković, a wealthy urban merchant, was built at the same address in 1938.

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Gornji Milanovac was completed in 1862. This neoclassical building is considered the most stylistically pure monument of its era. Another historic site is the former District Administration building, the oldest public building in the city. It houses the Modern Gallery of the Gornji Milanovac Cultural Centre. As the gallery’s displays may change, check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Memorial sites and exhibitions

The attic of the Yugoslav-Norwegian Friendship House contains a museum exhibition featuring personal belongings of people interned in Nazi camps in Norway. The exhibition therefore has a different focus from the collections at the Museum of the Rudnik-Takovo Region and complements the city’s historical perspective.

The Brdo Mira memorial complex includes an ossuary for Red Army soldiers who fell in the battles to liberate Gornji Milanovac. An open-air amphitheatre was also built within the complex. Together with the museums and historic buildings, these sites offer different points of interest for travellers interested in the city’s history.

Biennale and festivals

The International Biennial of Miniature Art took on an international character from its fourth exhibition in 1996. The Gornji Milanovac Cultural Centre has organised the Biennale since 1998. The two dates mark different stages in its development.

The Serbia World Music Festival has been held in Gornji Milanovac since 2009. The “Školska scena” festival is also part of the events calendar: it has been held in collaboration with the Milanovac Amateur Theatre since 2008. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates for the relevant year. This lets you plan your stay around a specific event rather than assuming that the festival’s history indicates current dates.

Public swimming pool and leisure

The Gornji Milanovac public swimming pool has a 50 × 21 m main pool and a 12 × 10 m children’s pool. At the beach volleyball court next to the pool, volleyball clubs from Gornji Milanovac and many recreational players take part in summer events and beach volleyball competitions.

An indoor swimming pool at the city’s Sports and Recreation Centre opened on 27 April 2024. If you plan to include this pool in your itinerary, check the latest visitor information before your visit. The city centre lies on the western side of the E763 European route, providing a geographical point of reference for the city.

Culture, memorial sites, festivals and sport offer different reasons to visit Gornji Milanovac. When deciding what to see, consider whether you would like to focus mainly on architectural and exhibition history, a particular events programme or the city’s leisure activities.
