Otopeni: Culture, Swimming and Public Transport
Accommodation in Otopeni
If you are looking for a hotel in Otopeni, choose your location based on your plans for your stay: Would you like to spend time at the swimming centre, attend a cultural event or organise trips between Otopeni and Bucharest? The city offers different points of interest for this – from the Complex Sportiv de Natație Otopeni to the “Ion Manu” Cultural Centre, as well as parks and public transport lines. First consider which activities or connections are important to you. For events and journeys, the specific dates and routes are key.
Connections between Otopeni and Bucharest
For local public transport, Otopeni has its own line called “Linia Albastră”. Express line 100 connects Bucharest-Otopeni “Henri Coandă” International Airport with Otopeni and the centre of Bucharest, continuing to Piața Unirii. This provides two different points of reference: a local public transport line and an express connection serving destinations in Bucharest. As route details can change, check the current route before planning a journey.
Swimming and sport
The Complex Sportiv de Natație Otopeni has two Olympic-size pools and four additional pools for training, learning to swim and rehabilitation. The facility also includes changing rooms, fitness rooms, a dryland diving training room, saunas, a restaurant and a relaxation area. The different pool facilities and amenities are a distinct focus when planning your stay.
The facility is also intended to host events: it is expected to hold national and international competitions and has around 2,800 spectator seats. If you would like to combine your stay with a specific visit, check in advance whether the facilities you want to use are available and whether any events are scheduled.
Cultural centre and classes
The “Ion Manu” Cultural Centre in Otopeni offers theatre performances, concerts, art exhibitions and workshops for children and adults. It also organises special events and festivals. Classes include folk dance, classical and modern dance, foreign languages, glass painting and chess. The classes are led by professional teachers, masters and artists. If you would like to attend a particular class or performance, check the current programme.
Festival and tradition
The Festival of Romanian Folk Art and Folk Tradition takes place every year in early September in Otopeni. It is considered an experience in which folk traditions connect the past and present. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the date of that year’s edition in advance.
History of Otopeni
The first documentary mention of Otopeni dates back to 1587 and appears in a charter issued by Prince Mihnea Turcitul. Another historical trace emerged during construction work at Bucharest “Henri Coandă” International Airport: in 1966, archaeologist Margareta Constantiniu discovered pottery fragments and objects from the first period of the Iron Age there. A settlement dating from the 10th century AD was also found in this area; the discovery points to continuous habitation. The written record and archaeological evidence thus point to different periods in the area’s history.
Parks and green spaces
Parc Central is considered a green oasis in the heart of Otopeni. The city’s public parks and gardens provide space for recreation, relaxation and outdoor sports. They therefore offer a different focus from the swimming centre or cultural centre and complement the range of interests visitors may have during their stay.
