Târgu Ocna: Salt Mine, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Târgu Ocna
Târgu Ocna offers several distinct reasons to visit: the underground tourist facility of the Salina, the Muzeul de Istorie Târgu-Ocna, historic architecture and natural areas. If you are looking for a hotel in Târgu Ocna, you can match the town’s various highlights to your travel interests. Salt mining and leisure facilities, collections, architectural history and landscapes are different facets of the town; the following sections keep these topics separate.
Salina Târgu Ocna: Underground Spaces and Surface Facilities
The interior of Salina Târgu Ocna consists of halls and passageways with vaulted or flat ceilings and irregular surfaces. The underground tourist facility includes courts for mini-football, basketball, tennis and table tennis. This area combines the distinctive design of the spaces with specific sporting activities. The Orthodox Church of Sfânta Varvara is a separate cultural highlight: it was established in 1992 within the salt deposit of the Salina and was the first underground Orthodox church in Europe.
Above ground, a leisure complex established in 2010 complements the Salina. It includes a saltwater pool, showers, a doctor’s office, a terrace and a shop. The underground facility and the surface leisure complex offer different experiences at the same salt-mining site: spaces, sports courts and a church below ground, and the facilities listed above ground.
Archaeology and Collections at the History Museum
The Muzeul de Istorie Târgu-Ocna holds collections on archaeology, art, local history, numismatics and ethnography. The archaeological items include Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery, as well as tools made of flint, bone, stone and bronze. These objects bring together different material groups and finds from several prehistoric periods.
Numismatics is another distinct area of the collection, with more than 400 items. The museum’s subjects thus range from archaeological evidence and art to local history, ethnography and coin collecting. If you are interested in the history of Târgu Ocna, you will find several ways to explore it here rather than just one historical focus.
Church Architecture and a Preserved Monastery Enclosure
Biserica Buna Vestire (Răducanu) is a representative architectural monument of late Moldavian Baroque. Its architectural features include a trefoil plan, a dome above the naos and a bell tower over the western porch. Together, these elements describe both the church’s spatial layout and distinctive features of its structure.
The enclosure of the former monastery has also been preserved alongside the church. On three sides, 5.20-metre-high walls with loopholes and two towers remain standing. The church and enclosure draw attention to different architectural aspects: the plan and structure of the church building, and the surviving walls and towers of the former monastery.
Nature Reserve and Landscapes
Măgura Târgu Ocna Nature Reserve is nationally protected and covers 89.70 hectares. It is primarily a botanical and forest reserve. The area lies within the town limits of Târgu Ocna, on the right bank of the Trotuș and the left bank of the Slănic, at elevations between 310 and 700 metres. Its riverbanks and range of elevations give the natural area a different character from Salina’s underground spaces.
Another name associated with the landscape is Parcul Măgura. The salt lake Lacul fără fund is located there and is also known as Groapa Burlacu. Both names refer to the same place; the alternate name is useful when finding your way around the lake.
Getting to the Salina
Salina Târgu Ocna can be reached via the Adjud–Ciceu railway line. If you are including the Salina in your travel plans, the Adjud–Ciceu railway line is a useful point of reference. The other topics described can be considered separately: they range from museum collections and church architecture to the nature reserve and lake.
