Horgești offers two distinct starting points for a trip: the village’s churches and historic buildings, and Lacul Horgești, where you can fish for carp. If you’re looking for a hotel in Horgești, you can decide in advance whether architectural history or time by the water should shape your stay more. The buildings can be put into context through their names, construction dates and former uses; at the lake, the key considerations are approximate dimensions, changing fish stocks and practical facilities.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The parish church of “Sfinţii Împăraţi Constantin şi Elena” was built between 1885 and 1889 by Profira Strat and her son George. The Catholic church of “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” was built later, between 1927 and 1938, in the Gothic style. Their construction dates mark two separate periods in the village’s history; the style attribution applies to the Catholic church.

The cemetery church of “Sfinţii Arhangheli Mihail şi Gavriil” is located in the western part of Horgești village, on Dumbrava Hill. Its iconostasis appears to have been created around 1800. This brings together a precisely named location and a history of furnishings dated only approximately.

The wooden church of “Sfinţii Voievozi” is a Class B historic monument, code BC-II-m-B-00845. Its roof is covered with shingles described as “în coadă de rândunică.” The iconostasis and two bells were transferred from the former church in the village center.

Conacul Strat broadens the picture beyond the churches. The historic monument dates from 1890 and formerly served as Horgești town hall. Its former use as a town hall provides a secular connection to the village’s history alongside its religious buildings.

Lacul Horgești: Dimensions and Carp Fishing

The rectangular Lacul Horgești is approximately 900 meters long and up to 350 meters wide. These measurements give an idea of its extent; area and depth figures offer another perspective. At high water, the area is 54.7 hectares, and the maximum depth is approximately 2.5 meters. Since the water level fluctuates seasonally, the area figure applies when water levels are high.

You can fish for carp at Lacul Horgești. The stock can change: the lake has approximately 400 carp weighing at least 15 kilograms, and carp weighing 20 kilograms are caught regularly.

There are 22 fishing spots by the lake, some of which have huts. Facilities include toilets with running water and showers with hot water; equipment for fish care is also available to rent. If hot showers or rental equipment are important to you, check current availability before your visit, as facilities and services can change.
